I need to travel Oxford to Manchester return on fairly flexible tickets (the return needs to be flexible).

Standard flexible return (peak travel) - £144 return
Oxford to Stafford flexible return - £88
Stafford to Manchester flexible return - £21.80
Total by splitting at Stafford - £109.80 (Saving £34.20)

This is all on the same direct trains (stopping at Stafford). I'm sure you can save considerably more if you can book further in advance without flexibility.

How about Oxford Wolves - £64 anytime return

Wolves Stafford £5.80 each way anytime day single

    Stafford Mcr £21.80 anytime return

    saves an extra £13 odd

I'm sure that could be bettered too

Do you need to return the same day, and will you be travelling in either direction at "peak" times (i.e. before 09:30)?
  • I am new to the world of split ticketing - always found it bewildering. However a national rail map of operators has helped but I'm not allowed to post links yet - sure other people know it.

We were lucky enough to win 2 nights in a hotel in Llandundo. When I first looked at tickets for the 2 of us from Reading (one with a 16-25 Railcard) it was £153 return. I noticed that some routes went through Chester but very slightly faster routes went through London Euston. As we are travelling on a Saturday and returning off peak we know 16-25 Railcard's fare would be around £20 return plus Oyster fare. I have a travelcard for London and the tube for work so I'm prepaid. A return from Euston to Llandudno for the 2 of us cost £53 in the end. Even without my travelcard this is ludicrous saving (£100)!

  • Oh yes and between 3 friends - me Reading, cousin Cardiff and friend Sheffield all meeting in Birmingham, I split at Banbury saving £22.40 as I could use my network railcard, I split the Cardiff journey at Gloucester saving £9 and split Sheffield at Derby saving £10.70. We saved £42.10 between us - whoop!

p.s. save another 60p by splitting the Glouster to Caerphilly leg again. can you keep splitting all the legs of the journey untill you have the cheapest price, if so that would be a fab app if it did all that for you.

I've managed to find a route from London Euston to Warrington Bank Quay via Lichfield Trent Valley. I also have a query as well.

Anyway, first of all, if I take the train from London Euston to Lichfield Trent Valley on the 12th June departing 12:46 to Lichfield Trent Valley arriving 14:36 this part of the journey will cost only £6. Then departing from Lichfield Trent Valley at 14:37 arriving at Warrington Bank Quay 16:26 this part of the journey should cost £11:50. £17.50 altogether to Warrington Bank Quay from London Euston, normally between £12 & £18 for cheapest singles though these all appear to be booked up for the above date. I’m even having difficulty finding cheapish tickets for the end of July, and I'd rather not leave it that late if I can help it.

My query is it appears the train to Lichfield Trent Valley goes via Crewe; National Rail informs me I have to change at Crewe from Lichfield Trent Valley which is OK though I'm more concerned about the route to Lichfield Trent Valley from Euston. It appears to me that I would need to stay on the train form Lichfield Trent Valley to Crewe as the train from Lichfield leaves one minute after arriving [apparently] (arriving 14:36 departing 14:37), it also leaves at the same platform (platform 1). I wouldn't have to get off at Lichfield would I? Can someone please verify this?

Hopefully I should be able to do the same journey back with any luck though if it cost more I will need to find an alternative route or something.

    Thanks in advance!

The 1437 train from Lichfield does stop at Crewe so yes it's a through train from London to Crewe. No problems there, you don't need to get off

What you may not have realised is that it's a London Midland slow train, not a Virgin service (the connection to Warrington is Virgin)

Takes nearly 3 hours to Crewe as opposed to half that on Virgin. 13 stops, and runs on loops off the mainline via Northampton and Stoke

Yeah, I realise that it's a slow train. I managed to double check after posting that it stops at quite a few stops alright. Looks like I may not have much option though as most prices appear to be over £32 for a single journey otherwise.

I can get a £12 ticket on the 12th at 21:10 though this won't get into until 23:15. I'm visiting my parents you see, to arrive that time would be a little inappropriate. Will have to see what's available for the return journey as well.

    Thanks dzug1!

Had a quick look around for returning routes, can either get a train from Warrington Bank Quay to Crewe, then Crewe to London Euston or Warrington Bank Quay to Stafford, Stafford to London Euston.

I actually ended up booking tickets for 13 June instead, retuning 20. Decided to pay the full fair instead of split ticketing the journeys as the prices appeared a bit more reasonable for those days £25 for the outbound journey, £12 for the return. That's £37 altogether which isn't as cheap as what I normally pay though as it's only a few quid more than if I were to split the journey I though I might as well pay this amount.

Thanks again and hope the routes above help anyone who needs to make a trip up to Warrington or visa versa in near future.

I'll keep a note of these options in the meantime just in case I need to make a trip up to Warrington in short notice.

    Thanks for your help.
