    Sorry.... yes, travelling from Bolton.

    Thanks for looking. Much appreciated.
  • Huddersfield to Liverpool day return

Split at Manchester Piccadilly - cost £22.60 instead of £27.50
Catch the 9.26 from Huddersfield and stay on the train!

Note: Use redspottedhanky online booking and you can pick up all the tickets (inc. Manchester - Liverpool) from the station of your choice (in this case Huddersfield).
  • Can anyone help with a return journey from Retford on 9/3/12 leaving around 8-9am to Edinburgh, returning on 11/3/12, leaving Edinburgh around 3? 2 adults, 1 with a 16-25 card. The route goes through so many stations as its on a mainline theres so many options and permeatations! Cheapest I've found is £132.80 which is just the standard advance online fare via Red Spotted Hanky.
    Many thanks in advance!

For a start, knock nearly £10 off that by booking through East Coast Trains.

A split at York and/or Newcastle might be worth considering - other combinations might or might not help - and sorry, I'm not going to work through them for you.

The reason I single out those places is that there are more train operators - TPE and XC - who might offer more options.

In general, if you can get through advance single tickets each way looking for splits is not that good a use of your time. Yes you might shave a bit off the price but not a lot. If any.
  • I've tried York and Newcastle with no joy - I wasn't asking you to work the others through for me, I was looking for previous experience with a similar journey. If I use Red Spotted Hanky and pay an extra £10 I can use £80 of Tesco Vouchers so suppose it's not too bad afterall. Thanks for your help

Fair point - do bear in mind that if those Tesco vouchers are not already in your RSH account it will take a couple of days to get them there and fares may (I don't say will) go up in that time

If you leave Retford at 08:44 and return at either 10:55hrs or 13:00hrs or 14:00hrs on the dates you've provided it should cost you £89 altogether. On the outward journey you'll have to change at Doncaster. If you return at 14:00hrs you'll also have to change at Doncaster.

    Otherwise try the following:

Retford to York, York to Newcastle, Newcastle to Berwick, Berwick to Edinburgh.

If you've already booked your tickets then maybe consider this next time you travel.

    1. Don't leave it to last moment to buy, buy for travel weeks in advance if possible and look for the cheap Advance singles.
    2. Use 'advance/more' options on your default train fare search website and add 'via Chester' this seems bring up some more cheaper fares but at the cost of a slightly longer journey.
