Advance single a whopping £136, with 2 train changes at Crewe and Cardiff Central. Split the ticket at the stations i`m changing trains at anyway(!) £57.

Not quite a fair comparison - £136 isn't an advance single - it's the open fare you could buy on the day, valid on any train and refundable if not used. Your other tickets give restricted availability and no refunds

    Still a good saving though

On that flow 'Glasgow to Barry Island' it is a good comparison, as there's no advance singles to compare it to, only an Anytime Single.

And OP it's a very good saving, just remember to leave the correct minimum station connection timings at Crewe (10 mins) and Cardiff Cen (7 mins)
Whoa! This image violates our terms of use and has been removed from view

    What fares have you found?

Without splitting an Advance Single is available on that day for £64.50... dep 08:00, arr 16:03, change at York and Bristol Temple Meads.

Have a look at Grand Central Trains from Sunderland. Often good fares there.

Are you planning to return at some time?
  • Thanks, cheapest I could find was £70 (via London).

I'm not going to be returning.
  • Am looking for a cheap way of travelling from fratton to Bristol temple meads this Sunday 12th and returning on the Tuesday 14th.

Outgoing we need to be leaving on the 9.16 train but coming back can be in the afternoon.

    Can anyone help?

An offpeak return at £42 is probably going to be your best bet. You can buy it on the day.

You can do it cheaper with advance singles but not on that 0916 train - they have long since sold out

My 15 year old son is going watching Bolton play Chelsea on the 25th February.

Cheapest train fare he can find is about £38.

I've tried this split ticketing but can't seem to get the hang of it.... is there a knack?

I'd be very grateful if anyone could find anything.

He'll need to be at Euston approx 1.00pm and returning approx 6.30pm.

    TIA.

Firstly, where is he travelling from? Bolton or somewhere else?

If travelling via Manchester, there is a Super Off Peak Day Travelcard from Piccadilly to London for £36.70 per adult.
Can't find a child's fare though... maybe ask at a station for that.
Will cover tube and bus in London to the match too.
Even adding £1.80 for a child's Off Peak Day return from Bolton to Man. Pic. to that adult fare more less matches what you have found and includes London travel.
If there is a child version of that travelcard ticket, the whole return trip, including London Travel, would be pennies over £20.00.

Split ticketing does not always produce a cheaper fare.
It is simply a process of checking ticket prices from/to the stopping points on the journey.
Long slog that doesn't always work.

Well assuming he is travelling from Bolton (you don't say...) -

That's not a bad fare - and it's flexible. He can use any train back even if he misses the booked one And it can be bought on the day at the same price - no loss if the match gets postponed or cancelled,

You can shave a few ££ off by getting advance singles at £17.25 each way on specified trains - a few of which fit your times. But these are train specific, non-refundable and need to be booked now
