Very good - can you do as well coming back?
  • I've got to travel from Llandudno Junction to Euston and back several times in the next few weeks for work purposes, carrying a fair amount of paperwork with me, so would prefer to travel first class.

Having tried a number of split ticket possibilities (breaking at Chester, Crewe, Rugby, Nuneaton, Milton Keynes), I've had no success in finding any deals.

Has anyone got any suggestions, please?

    Thanks in advance.

    Try splitting at Crewe;
LLandudno Jun to Crewe £76.20 Anytime 1st
Crewe to London Euston £105 Anytime 1st London Midland Trains Only Total return £181.20

IIRC on the LLandudno Jun to Crewe Leg only Virgin trains convey 1st class and the Crewe to London via London Midland trains takes a lot longer.

Anytime 1st Llandudno Jun to London £403 so a saving of £221.80

the wife and daughter had to go from aberdeen to manchester last year. they were in a rush going down so just single booked. on the return i had time to find a split at edinburgh same trains same everything as the singlr through fare but at 1/2 the price. definatly use the advanced singles just remember you have to get the named trains.
  • Hi,

I regularly travel Taunton to London for work, sometimes at short notice so I can't always get an advance ticket, they also seem to be getting more scarce.

So not fancying the £105 single cost decided to try my first split.

06:17 Taunton to Paddington arriving 08:38

    Split as follows:

    Taunton to Westbury £11.20
    Westbury to Pewsey £7.90
    Pewsey to Newbury £7.80
    Newbury to London Paddington £25.90

    Total cost: £52.80
    Saving: £52.20!

Same train no changes, job done.
  • In addition to my post fro the 06:18 Taunton to London Paddington a split for the 07:18 also looks good even though it only calls at Reading.

    Taunton to London Paddington £105

    Taunton to Reading £78
    Reading to London Paddington £20.60

    Total £98.60
    Saving £6.40

What's better though is that even checking the day before travel an Advance ticket is still available to Reading, but not all the way to London.

With an Advanced ticket to Reading available at £66 this brings the total down to £86.60 and a saving of £18.40!

I'm hooked on this now and it isn't even my money as I claim it back on expenses!

By travelling via London and being prepared to use specific trains, it can be done for £62.00 (plus cross London transfer).

Dep Bath 07:13, arr Paddington 08:44. Advance Single = £12.50.
Dep Kings Cross 10:48, arr Wakefield Kirkgate 12:42. Advance Single = £19.00.

Dep Wakefield Westgate 19:26, arr Kings Cross 21:52. Advance Single = £21.00*
Dep Paddington 23:03, arr Bath Spa 00:49. Advance Single = £9.50.

So total could be as low as £62.00 plus cross London walk/run/bus/tube/taxi. ;)

To get that fare marked with an asterisk, you must book it on East Coast Trains website. May as well book them all there.
  • I need to travel Oxford to Manchester return on fairly flexible tickets (the return needs to be flexible).

Standard flexible return (peak travel) - £144 return
Oxford to Stafford flexible return - £88
Stafford to Manchester flexible return - £21.80
Total by splitting at Stafford - £109.80 (Saving £34.20)

This is all on the same direct trains (stopping at Stafford). I'm sure you can save considerably more if you can book further in advance without flexibility.
