I am stuck have tried my best at splitting tickets at birmingham cheltenham crewe but can seem to get any cheaper that the return which is 160 for 2 adults 3 children with family railcard from bristol to preston ging n 9th sept and returning 11th.
any help or tips appreciated0 -
It looks like that splitting has increased the cost, as a return for the through journey is £144.40
I'd have thought those splits would help, but evidently not.0 -
The main MSE page on Split Ticketing states:Step 2. Find out where the train stops
Use the National Rail journey planner. Just search for a journey, click on 'details' and then 'see calling points', to see where it stops.
As far as I can see, 'details' and 'see calling points' have been dropped from the journey planner website, which makes planning a split journey almost impossible.
I'm searching for how to plan a London to Dorchester split journey but don't know which stations are enroute.
Can any one help please?0 -

It's still there, do your search then when it displays your results click on the blue and white 'i' circle on any of the timed trains, then click on '+show calling points' it will then display the stations that the train calls at.Whoa! Recently I arranged a plan from Manchester to Cambridge via London to see my friends. To my surprise, an advance ticket price from London to Cambridge (20 pounds) is even higher than that from Manchester to London (11.5 pounds).
Finally, I extend the destination to Birmingham and grab an bargain. It sounds like a mock, doesn't it?
All the ticket prices I bought are listed below, of which all are irrespective of time and only pursue the lowest.
Outwards:
Manchester - London: 11.5 pounds
London - Cambridge:
actual route Birmingham - London - Cambridge : 11.5 pounds
Return:
Cambridge - Manchester:
actual route Cambridge - London - Birmingham - Manchester
16 pounds
The duration is about 80 mins longer than the direct route.
All the prices of these simply direct route above are over 50 pounds, respectively.
Generally, my experience of buying train tickets is that no matter which train stop I plan to get off, I try to book the tickets between big stations.
I should apologize for my English. If I made any misunderstanding, you can contact me for more detail by email LingQin83@gmail.com .0 -

An Anytime Single is £3.50. No return tickets for this short route.
A 16-25 railcard will reduce that £3.50 fare to £2.30, but only after 10am.
Also Railcard costs £28.00, valid for a year though.
Looks like Season Ticket is the best rail option.
Any buses that go that way?
But I guess they won't be much cheaper on a daily basis, but maybe a weekly/monthly ticket will help.0 -
Hi guys,
I am not 100% clued up on how this whole thing works. Basically i have recently started a new job for my 3rd year placement for my degree @ a company in Bristol.
At the moment i travel up on the 9:03 train monday morning and come back on the friday to spend the weekend with my wife and children.
currently it is costing me £56 per week for the return ticket which is getting a bit to much now, and i wondered if there were any ways i can make this much cheaper.
Bodmin Parkway -> Bristol Temple meads
If anyone knows of any split ticket routes which will help me out that would be awesome
thanks0 -

An Off Peak Return from Bodmin Parkway to Exeter St D is £24.00, as is one from Exeter StD to Bristol TM.
Greater Savings can be made if you are able to commit to specific trains and can buy ahead.
For example, using exactly the same outward train (09:03 from Bodmin) an Advance Single from Bodmin to Exeter StD on Mon 7 Nov is £4.00. And an Advance Single from Exeter StD to Bristol TM on the same day, and the same train, is also £4.00.
The return may be slightly more... I'll leave you to check.
Info from Southern Railways website.
Also, are you under 26?
Or classified as a full time student?
If so consider a 16-25 railcard.
That will knock a third off most of those fares.0 -
West Yorkshire Real Ale Rail Trail from Preston (lancs)
2 of us will be leaving Preston (Lancs.) after 10.00 am and returning home that night. We will want to stop at most rail stations between (and including) Stalybridge and Dewsbury.
Seem to be able to get "Northern Duo" tickets for part of the journey, and there is a West Yorkshire Rover ticket from Marsden, but there are many alternative combinations of tickets. Can anyone help with the best combination of tickets for this journey ?0
