Hi folks, hope you can help.

I've been splitting the ticket from reading to Birmingham for some time now, however tonight I was told that I would be asked to get off the train and wait for the next one when I get to Banbury.

The lady selling the tickets told me they were illegal. I know they are not and I challenged her asking "why are you selling me an illegal ticket" to which she replied "I can only sell them if the customer asks"... So my request changes the law?

Anyhow what i wanted to know is do I have to get off the train? Is this some technicality? Can I get off the train and walk to the next carriage? Any help with the legal position on this one would be appreciated.
    :-)

    Wow, if you split the tickets in accordance with the quote airliebird gave and there's no Train Company Specific tickets involved then your correct, please could you repost your post on the RailUk forum;

As they love to hear about stories like this, they also know the correct channels to report this, which will get this 'competent;)' train manger refreshed on the rules with split ticketing.

    Indeed!

We need more information, but can assist you in drafting up a letter to the company.

In particular we need to know where you were purchasing the ticket (e.g. at Reading station?)
  • Lets hope the second leg from Banbury to Birmingham wasnt a 'Chiltern trains only' advance ticket.

Anywhere the train stops is a potential target.

Remember, splitting does not guarantee that a saving can be made.

As wealdroam has mentioned - find out the calling pattern on cross country and try and split that way.

Or maybe into London then up from King X. But without knowing any set dates we cant really look for you.

    Hi

Not sure if I have left this too late but my husband and I are going to London on Sunday 7th August and coming back on Tuesday 9th - we would prefer to leave earlyish on the Sunday and afternoon return on the Tuesday and we have no railcards.
I have tried split ticketing but have no idea what I am doing and it just seems to come up more expensive.

We were looking at leaving from Darlington but Yarm, Thornaby or Middlesbrough would do if it made it cheaper.

Huge thanks in advance if anybody can help

http://www.grandcentralrail.com/ may help - their off peak walk on fares are fairly cheap

Split ticketing is not a panacea - in general if advance fares are available for the complete journey (as they are from Darlington for yours) then they are better than splitting. Just check they don't add up to more than a return

If you are eligible for senior railcard(s) they would be worth getting.
  • London to Telford (change at Birmingham New Street), then at Telford I had to get off the London Midland train and get on the Arriva train only 7 minutes behind on same platform for the outbound journey - there's no changing at Telford on return journey. Saved just over £20.

It's a weird changing at Telford because both trains actually go to Shrewsbury!

    Still worth it.

Not really because as you mention you are using 2 different TOCs and their advance tickets are only valid on their own services.
