  • No railcards - I can get the calling points from NRE which helpfully shows them but there may be many combinations of stops and I just wondered if there were tried and trusted splits on either of these routes.

    There is saving to be had, but more info is required ie; is it a day trip? , is it at commuter times? do you mind a longer journey to save money and most importantly do you need flexible tickets or can you commit to a certain time trains?

  • Single trip after work at around 5pm - happy to book Advance or Anytime tickets - whatever is cheaper but ideally what I wanted to find was a split that would reduce the gap between the advance and anytime as if the cliff wasn't so sharp then I would prefer booking on the day and gaining flexibility.

    Fair enough. But now we are entering the Peak time for all TOCS and both FGW and EC so your going to have to just follow the stops of your services and work out from there really if you want to just buy on the day

    Single trip after work at around 5pm -[snip].

    The cheapest I could find for leaving around that time is an Anytime Day Single London to Bristol Temple Meads 'via Warminster & Salisbury' @£34.10

    However, this train leaves London Waterloo and goes via Warminster and Salisbury and takes 3 hours instead of the direct 1hr 45mins from London Paddington.

    To find this fare on the East Coast website, enter a search 'London to Bristol TM' once got your results, then 'select route' and tick 'Warminster and Salisbury' and update.

  • Hey, that's a great trick. I didn't know you could select routings like that. Many thanks. Obviously it's a bit slower going via SWT - 1HR 20, but Waterloo is easier for me as it's on the Northern so, all things considered, it may add only 40 mins to my journey.

    Happy to help, remember it's a 'walk on' fare so you can by it now or just before your journey. If you buy it from a station ie; London Waterloo, just ask for the ticket to be routed; via Warminster & Salisbury, but I'm sure that Waterloo ticket office is run by SWT so they should have no problem in selling you this ticket.

    you may actually be able to do this journey cheaper to if you do it oftena and via sailsbury. Buy a network railcard then get a ticket to salisbury which is on the edge of the zone and then the other single to Bristol without the railcard discount. ive not looked so im not sure if it will be cheaper but worth checking out to see if you save a couple of ££

    One would think that would work, but unfortunately;
    London to Salisbury Off Peak Day Single with network card £21.60
    Salisbury to Bristol TM Off Peak Day Single £18.40
    Total £40
