Travelling short is not allowed on Advance Singles.
You may well find yourself in some difficulty if your ticket is checked, by barrier or staff, when leaving the station at Northampton.
You could easily be asked to pay for a completely new ticket from Watford Junc to Northampton.
The Advance ticket terms and conditions on the National Rail Enquiries website tells us...Break of journeyYou may not start, break and resume, or end your journey at any intermediate station except to change to/from connecting trains as shown on the ticket(s) or other valid travel itinerary.0 -
Yes i agree its risky, however the £3.95 ticket includes a change of train at northampton. So you will need to leave the train anyway. Not sure if you would be breaking the T&C if you left the station. Hmmm
NB Prices i quoted above are including a railcard0 -

Yes, even if you have to change train at Northampton, if you leave the station then that's classed as breaking your journey. Whether you get chinned by the gate staff is another debate, mind you I suppose you could always ask to pop out for a smoke before your connecting train arrives.

What fares have you found?
There are Advance Singles at £14.25 each way on your dates... even a few at £11.15 on the outward leg.
To get those fares you must book on East Coast Trains website.
Click on select a route down left side, then tick box labeled Via East Coast & other TOC connecting services to see these fares.
Oh, and they're into Kings Cross.0 -
hiya,i cant find any at 11 or even 14 pounds.the cheapest i can find on there is 19 pounds each way.its about the same on east midlands trains too.0

Put your journey, dates and times in.
Use London as your destination.
Then when you have the fares displayed, click on select a route down left side, tick box labeled Via East Coast & other TOC connecting services, then click the Update button, to see these fares.0 -
Cheapest I found for a return trip from Falmouth to London was 2 singles total £89
But if I split it I got down to
Falmouth - Truro £3.60
Truro - Exeter £8
Exeter - London £13
London - Exeter £13
Exeter - Truro £8
Truro - Falmouth £3.60
TOTAL £49.20
saving £39.80 Involves 2 instead of 1 train changes.
Thank you for this thread. Still cannot get over the fact that you can only get serious price reductions if you know where to look!!0 -

The savings you list are substantial but you have quoted Advance tickets, so you do lose flexibility. The £89 ticket can be bought on the train from Falmouth.
Ensure you have allowed plenty of time when changing trains, ie. at least the minimum connection time that applies to the station in question.0 -
hello, can any of you experts please tell me the best place to try and split tickets for a Manchester to Reading return journey?
I have tried Banbury, Birmingham and Macclesfield without much success.
Travelling over the end of May bank holiday weekend, possibly a day or 2 before but off peak. Thanks in advance for your help0
