    Split at Manchester

(Note this is with a family railcard - so this is an additional saving.
If you do not have a card I guess there will be an even bigger difference.

    Full fare: £16.65

    York -Manchester £9.80
    Manchester-Liverpool £3.65 Saving £3.10

I saved even more when travelling to Manchester airport from York and splitting at Manchester (Cannot remember how much, but worth checking if you are travelling to an airport)

Forgot to add the quoted fare is for 1 adult and 1 child with railcard

Not massive but shows it works!
  • Definitely much cheaper to get tickets to and from Birmingham (Wolverhampton may work as well). You have to change now in Birmingham anyway if you want to avoid the London tube, I go for there rather than Wolverhampton as the trains to Edinburgh are more frequent. I suspect it works for other stops on the Birmingham to Bournemouth line as well. It's usually around £125 single otherwise, I can normally do it for around £30 - £35 by splitting.

Wanting to travel from Newcastle to London on Friday 24th June and return on Sunday 26th June. There will also be a member of our party travelling from Dancaster to London and return (on the same dates).

    Thanks in advance.

You need to wait another week or two for the cheap tickets to be released.

  • Hi. I'm traveling from Rayleigh in Essex to Moreton-in-Marsh Gloucestershire in a few weeks time for which the full single fare is £38.00. I tried splitting the route but it didn't save much however, I found that by going from Rayleigh to Swindon and then from Swindon to Moreton-in-Marsh I can save 60 percent (£10.00 from Rayleigh to Swindon & £4.50 from Swindon to Moreton making a total of £14.50). The journey takes 32 minutes longer and involves 4 changes instead of 2 but what the heck, I can put up with that.

It's also a heck of a long way round - you get a 'free' journey from Didcot to Swindon and back doing it that way.

    But hey ho....
  • Thanks Martin for your video guide about splitting the journey to save money. My wife and son are travelling to and from Glasgow to Manchester next week. My initial enquiries showed returned fares for the two adults at £134 but by changing times I was able to reduce the cost to £108. I then received your newsletter and saw the video guide. I then split the journey at Preston and lo and behold I was able to buy them tickets for £56.20 which as you can see is a saving of almost 50%.

    Thanks again, selbinho:beer:

Doesnt sound much but Worcester Shrub Hill to Burton upon Trent - split at Birmingham New Street (where a change is necessary anyway) saved a fiver. Single to Brum - £6.80 and then advance Brum to Burton £7.50. Normal price £19 for a through ticket. :) every penny counts when you're skint...
