I'm looking to help my parents with some train tickets. They don't have a Railcard but could get one if required.

They want to travel from Thetford to Oban on 10th June and return from Fort William to Thetford on 25th June.

Obvious changing points for the journey seem to be Peterborough, Edinburgh Waverley and Glasgow Queens Street.

When would be a good time to buy? My idea so far is to get returns from Thetford to Crianlarich which comes in at £135 per person (without Railcard). I'd then need to get them a single from Crianlarich to Oban (£10.30) to complete the outward journey and from Fort William to Crianlarich (£17) to start the return journey.

So, total cost is £162.30 per person without a Railcard. This seems dreadfully expensive. How can I reduce the cost for them?

    Thanks, RustyG

I found £159.30 return (2adults) this has gone up to £168 with east coast site. tried split at necastle or york or doncaster but these are making the price higher. I was looking at 9.04 from motherwell but timesd it for 13.00 from London KX
No, I cannot see any splits that will save more than a pound or two.

I would go for that £159.30 fare, which is the Off Peak Return fare for two adults with one Disabled Railcard and includes cross London tube.

I had no trouble finding that ticket on East Coast Trains website.

I see from your post on another forum that they're in their 60s, so the first thing to say is definitely get a Senior Railcard each.
You start making a saving with a railcard when you spend over £78 each.

    Maybe go via Manchester.
Advance Singles from Lancaster to Manchester Piccadilly = £7.65 or less each way.

Advance Singles from Manchester Piccadilly to Llanelli = £29.75 each way.

So can be done for just over £73.00.
That's total for all of you with railcard.

Be aware that there are no trains between Preston and Lancaster on Sat 16 April, so maybe avoid that day to return.
Sunday morning is also affected, but you'll probably miss that if you come back that day.

Quoted £197 1st class via Bristol Parkway

    Split via Birmingham New Street
    LDS - CHD £14
    CHD - BHM £33
    BHM - CNM £20.50
    CMD - CDF £17
    Total: £84.50

Leaving at same time, arrives 6 minutes later.

Yes, CNM not CMD. I used the national rail site to find the prices then booked on TransPennineExpress site.

Travelling peak 16:00 on a Friday if that helps.

Cheers, found your fares on the Tpe website, just one last point, all the fares you have quoted are 1st Advance singles which means your booked to specific trains. So please make sure you get your timings right or if you need to change trains give yourself plenty of time to do so incase of late running train, else the train manager could make you pay again.

    But importantly nice saving

  • Advance ticket prices from manchester to watford were looking at £16.50 for the absolute cheapest (changing at milton keynes), 1 week before departure. However i found after a bit of searching i found:

    Manchester - Stafford = £3.95 (cross country)
Stafford - Watford Junction = £4.60 (london midland)

    thats £8.55, a saving of a minimum £7.95

Also looking i noticed if you wish to travel watford to northampton then buy an advance to conventry or birmingham which can be as little as £3.95.
