Yeh i never bothered to look apart from singles.. though Scotrails website is a pain in the ar5e for that - always just gives you singles first.. Though then again is this a ploy to eek out a few quid extra from people who have read about split ticketing/advance singles and they dont look any further

hi there,

i hope someone can help me get the cheapest fair avaliable to go from Bentley South Yorks to Liverpool on the 22nd Feb, 1 adult and one 15 yr old, i want to set off as early as poss and return the next day setting off from liverpool about 4pm,

ive been trailing the sites but now my head is all mixed up ,lol

Cheapest advance options I can find:

Outward:
Bentley 06:28 - Liverpool 09:43, change at Leeds and Stalybridge £16 + £8 = £24
OR
Bentley 08:01 - Liverpool 10:58, change at Leeds
£14.50 + 7.25 = £21.75

Return:
Liverpool 14:22 - Bentley 16:57, change at Leeds
£14.50 + 7.25 = £21.75
OR
Liverpool 15:22 - Bentley 17:57, change at Leeds
£16 + £8 = £24
OR
Liverpool 16:22 - Bentley 18:57, change at Leeds
£14.50 + 7.25 = £21.75

All fares ONE WAY only. Therefore cheapest return fare is £43.50 for the two of you, VS £66.30 for Anytime Returns for you both.

All tickets are advance purchase, available at the time of reply (15:45 05/02/11). Must travel on specified trains, must buy ASAP to get that fare. etc.

Just to double check, I've tried spliting the ticket, best I can get the Anytime Return fare down to is £61.80, by splitting at Stalybridge. Thus a saving of £4.50 on the through fare, but it is still cheaper to buy Advance fares if possible.

I make the journey to see family from Plymouth to Edinburgh a lot. Please can anyone tell me??

Aren't there any "fare stops" like there are on buses where the fare changes?
Is it just random as to what stops depending on times/dates/destination/departing stop? Or are the stops pre-defined?

The fare will change with each stop - with few exceptions. Edinburgh Haymarket/ Waverley are likely to be the same, as (on long distance travel) are Temple Meads/Parkway in Bristol.

But any one fare between two points will vary from the maximum walkon anytime price to a possibly very cheap advance single
