I've got to make quite a few journeys from Guildford to Newcastle to visit my increasingly ailing mother, and would appreciate if anyone has any hints on splitting tickets. Route is Guildford to Waterloo, then Kings Cross to Newcastle. Many thanks
Don't know when you are planning to travel, but Advance Singles are available either way without splitting at £34.70 each way on a sample date 15/16 March when booked on East Coast trains website.

Will probably be available at that price or cheaper on other dates if you book far enough ahead.

Remember, with Advance Singles you need to travel on booked trains.

Perhaps consider Grand Central Trains from London to Sunderland then Metro to Newcastle. £61 Off Peak Return if you are over 60.

You should be able to get it a bit cheaper:

Bristol - Chelt £15.50 off peak return
Chelt - Brum £21 off peak return
Brum - M/Cr £13.50 plus £11.50 advance singles if the times suit

You could try going 'via Newport S.Wales' and gets some £18 Advance singles one way, plenty available for the times you stated.

To get the fare, use any online train fare search engine and 'advance options' and select 'Via' on the East Coast website it's 'more options' then 'Via'

Thanks Wealdroam. Problem is, I'll need to go up when my mum's not too great, so generally at short notice. I'd generally be going late afternoon Thurs and coming back Sunday. Cheapest I could find for next weekend was about £166...on Thurs fares double after 2pm and I cant get away from work that early unfortunately. That's why I'm hoping a split ticket could be cheaper. And a few more years left til I'm 60 so cant access the £61 ticket yet!!

Don't know why I didn't mention it before, but an Off Peak Return Kings Cross to Sunderland with Grand Central Trains is £81 for everyone under the age of sixty.

GC don't run many trains, just three trains each day allow off peak tickets, but the times might suit you.

    How about...
Thur 3 Feb, dep Kings Cross 19:18, arr Sunderland 22:54.
Coming back on Sunday 6 Feb, dep Sunderland 09:10. 13:42 or 18:42, arriving Kings Cross 12:47, 17:24 and 22:17 respectively.

Plus £3 each way on the Metro to Newcastle.
And of course you still need the Guildford to Kings Cross bit... at £13.80 each way for an Anytime Single.

    So that's £114.60 total return.
  • Hope you can help.
I saw an interesting winter weekend break and need a cheap way of getting there by train, day or sleeper, Friday, return Monday.

I looked at eastcoast for a few dates over 120 return, no railcard.
Splitting at Manchester mobitix £32 approx return, then onward return costs £85.70 - anything cheaper?

If you leave Guildford on the 08:38 going via reading then return on either the 0900 or 0930 which will have to go via Kings cross you can get that price down even further to £104.00

Thats via the cross country website here http://www.crosscountrytrains.co.uk/

Ive just checked for a months time - say on the 3rd march and if you bought yourself a network railcard your open return(after 10am)

    Guildford > Reading £13.00
Reading to Newcastle on the 1241 is direct and is £39.00
Returning on the sunday at either 0800 or 0930 is £39.00 also.

If those are too early for you then there are plenty @ £50

So its possible to get it under £90 for your whole journey if you can plan even a month in advance

You might find a split at Glasgow helps if there are advance fares M/Cr - Glasgow at the times you want to travel

You might also pick up a bargain berth on the sleeper if you go Thursday night - but only to Glasgow. You'd have to get a normal train from/to there

A date would be helpful. though there are some seated ticekts on the sleeper that go from £49 each way PP but you do have to buy those well in advance as they are popular.

roughly looked at 25th - 28th of this month for you

    And Euston @ 0730 - GLC PP £47.50
    Returning on the 1840 - £18.50

Using the virgin fare finder http://www.farefinder.virgintrains.co.uk/

And then the returns from glasgow to Crianlarich on those dates is 31.80

    So in total thats £97.30
