  • Hi, I'm new to this forum and I am amazed at the savings on train fares you can find.

I've got a few questions about splitting the cost of train fares on a number of routes I use often.

Nottingham to Liverpool? Is it best to split at either Sheffield, Manchester, Derby or Crewe?

Nottingham to Wolverhampton, I split at New Street as it can save me about £5 but is there a better place to split such as Leicester?

Any ideas on splitting from Nottingham to London? Or do I just wait for advanced tickets?

Best deal I got was Nottingham to Edinburgh via Newark with East Midlands Trains, total £29.50 return. £5.50 return from Nottingham to Newark Castle (25 mins), 10 min walk to Newark Northgate (on ECML). £12 single from Newark to Edinburgh booked in advance on EastCoast, change in Doncaster. £12 return journey from Edinburgh to Newark, again with EastCoast direct with change in York this time. Get off in Newark and back to Newark Castle for train to Nottingham.

Newark has got 2 train stations and most trains from Nottingham stop at Newark Castle, few stop at NorthGate. Its only a 10 min walk between both stations. Even though I live in Nottingham, Newark is my home town and don't mind a pint in my favourite pub on the way to Northgate station.

I need to get back from Glasgow to Nottingham at the end of May, I know tickets are not available but I've seen £3 Megatrain from Glasgow Central to Birmingham (journey was in March and can't remember date or time) and train from Birmingham New Street to Nottingham would be about a tenner so, £13 from Glasgow to Nottingham is a bargain.

What is the cheapest way to get from Ketteing to Liverpool on a Friday afternoon with split ticketing. so far the best I can get is splitting at Nuneaton does anyone know of a better option?

A bus to Northampton should be less than a fiver and an advance single from there to Liverpool at £15 is a possibility

Errm try it and see - you seem to know what to do. The answer may well vary depending on date/time of day, etc.

Nottingham to London will almost certainly be best off on advance tickets but if you can't get them look at Wellingborough or Bedford - remembering the train must stop there. And don't forget megatrain do this route too.

And there's no point in buying full fare split tickets before advance fares come out - they will be the same price on the day

Knock a couple of pounds off that fare by splitting at Stratford.

Not really feasible to avoid London.

Hi yeah thanks for that Ive just split my tickets so here goes

    0830 NORWICH - COLCHESTER 0928 - COLCHESTER 0933 -

    STRATFORD 1022- 1047 UNDERGROUND - LONDON WATERLOO 1135 - BOURNEMOUTH 1320

Journey price Norwich- Stratford change 1 Colchester price £15.00

Stratford-Bournemouth Via Underground to Waterloo no changes £12.00

Total £27.00, Straight fare Norwich-Bournemouth £35.00- 105.00 depending on which train you catch

I'm amazed that just by splitting and changing at Colchester saved £8.00

Used savings to get return journey from Liverpool street - norwich on the sunday for £8.00

I did find another price whilst trying to split tickets Clapham - Bournemouth £10.00 one way

    Thanks for advice wealdroam:j

Need to be in Wolverhampton by 12.30 on 22/01/11, this is the best I can come up with.

Nottingham to Wolverhampton £22.70 off peak return

Nottingham to Birmingham to Wolverhampton £15 + £4.40 = £19.40 off peak return

    Nottingham to Derby to Birmingham to Wolverhampton £5.90 + £13.70 + £4.40 = £24 off peak return

Nottingham to Birmingham (via Coach) walk to New Street to Wolverhampton £10.30 + £4.40 = £14.70 (Not too much difference in time getting the coach from Nottingham compared to the train)

Think I have a winner combining coach and the train.
  • Nottingham to Liverpool, off peak return £47.80

Nottingham to Liverpool, £25 return splitting in Sheffield. Nottingham to Sheffield, £6 each way on some trains if booked in advanced. Sheffield to Liverpool £6-£7 each way again if booked in advanced.

    Hi everyone

I've only just discovered this split ticketing thing - brilliant!

I've had a look at a few sites but I can't find any cheap fares for these routes.

Going afternoon on 28th Jan 3pm ish from Exeter / Departing 30th Jan about 3pm ish from Waterloo.

I will be going from Crewkerne and my partner from Exeter - hence the different routes.

If anyone can help, I'd be very grateful.

    Thanks

    Clare.

Don't think splitting will help on that route.

Consider Megatrain for the outward leg from Exeter... £15.
    No Megatrain service on Sunday.

Advance Singles are £27 each way from Exeter to Waterloo at your times.

Advance Singles are £22 each way from Crewkerne to Waterloo at your times.

Remember, with Advance tickets you must travel on the booked trains.

What sites did you look at?
    What fares did you find?

Above fare info from Southern Railway.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

I think they may be the best fares.

Unfortunately I can't get the megatrain reduced train as it's not the right time.

    I'll keep on looking!

I looked and trainline, firstgreatwestern and megatrain.

    Thanks
