  • I have tried a few combinations but my head is spinning so was hoping if someone could help me? I will be travelling from Colchester to Birmingham on Saturday 26th February. I need to arrive in Birmingham by around 12.30pm and would hope to get home by the last train of the day coming back into Colchester. Please help!!

If you don't mind travelling V early then you can do the journey for £23

Colchester to Birmingham NS 26/2 dep 05:12 arr 08:27 Advance single £11.50 (there is other trains arriving into Birmingham before 12:30 for £28.50)
Birmingham NS to Colchester 26/2 dep 21:30 arr 01:32 Advance single £11.50

Info from East Coast website and you must travel on booked trains.

  • Thanks for that, although can't leave that early as still b/feeding my LO. I shall have a play around on that site and see if I can come up with something. The best I was getting was £40 with my tinkerings on thetrainline.

Dont use the trainline to book though.. they charge you silly amounts of money.

    Through fares:

    Off Peak Day Rtn (CDR)
    Route High Wycombe
    £57.40

    Off Peak Return (SVR)
    route +London
    £63.40

    Off Peak Return (SVR)
    Route Not London
£72.50 (XC are having a laugh!)

    Splitting

    (Avoiding London)
Colchester - Peterborough SVR (Route Ipswich) £28.50
Peterborough - Melton Mowbray CDR £14.00
Melton Mowbray - Birmingham CDR £14.60
Total to avoid London = £57.10

    (via London)
I'd go via London, it's a better journey and you are avoiding the awful Cross Country (XC) trains that can be as short as 2-carriages. I believe they are trying to price people off their trains.

If you go via London it is also cheaper to split,

    Colchester - Ingatestone
Super Off Peak Day Return (CBA)
    £12.10

    Ingatestone - Birmingham
    Rte +High Wycombe
    Super Off Peak Return (OPR)
    £26.00
Valid by any train on Saturdays, Sundays & Bank Holidays

TOTAL =£38.10 (includes LU between Stratford/Liverpool Street and Marylebone)

The train must call at Ingatestone, for this to be valid, and you must pass through - but no need to call at - High Wycombe (ie, any train to Birmingham from Marylebone)

However for 80p more you could buy a ticket from Colchester to Shenfield, this costs £12.90, this allows you on a fast 'InterCity' train between Colchester and Shenfield, but you would need to ask the guard if he/she is willing to let you stay on this train through to London as technically the train would likely be set down only at Shenfield so the validity of your combination would be open to debate & interpretation.

    AVOID THETRAINLINE!!

The fares I quoted above are valid on any train (on a Saturday) and can be bought from Colchester ticket office on the day of travel.
  • The cheapest available ticket shown is a super off peak at £38 return. Myself and my boyfriend make this journey ever 3-4 weeks to see each other and since train fares have now gone up I looked for cheaper alternatives. Baring in mind these fares are cheap advanced and only at certain times of the day.
    Out
    Soton to Reading 20:15 £7.50
    Reading to Stroud 21:11 £7.50

    Return
    Stroud to Reading 20:30 £4.50
    Reading to Soton 22:48 £9

This works out at £28.50 saving me £9.50 and all for the sake of getting a later journey arriving two hours later in Stroud.

    Hi,

I am having problems getting a cheap single ticket from Norwich to Bournemouth.

I need to travel on friday 11th of feb pref getting into bournemouth at 1300 no later as have meeting. The cheapest ticket ive found that will get me there at that time is £35 via london . could any of you good people suggest a split ticket route or an alternative route than going via london as cant seem to get much cheaper than that for the time I need to be there.

Really would be greatful if anybody knows of a cheaper way

    many thanks

  • Booked a single ticket for my daughter to travel at the end of February. The cheapest through ticket available at the time she needs to travel was an off peak at £146. By splitting the journey at Exeter the cost was Truro to Exeter £8 and Exeter to Leeds £36.50. Total cost £44.50 a saving of £101.50!

Knock a couple of pounds off that fare by splitting at Stratford.

Not really feasible to avoid London.
