Thank you dzug1 - I tried all stops as a combination and it brings the cost down by £40 - I double checked what platforms the trains arrive into and go out of and it looks like I don't have to change and it is the exact same route as the direct one.

are you sure you only want split tickets? ;)

There are many ways to reduce the ticket price. Splitting the journey into a combination of tickets is just one method!

You need to get the 0712 from Cheltenham Spa.

    Cheltenham Spa - Leeds
    Anytime Return (SOR) £131.00
Off Peak Return (SVR) £70.90 (Valid after 0930)

    Cheltenham Spa - Thirsk
Off Peak Return (SVR) £82.60 (Valid after 0500 :))
    (Finish "short" at Leeds)

There is nothing to prevent a "break of journey" (which includes finishing "short") on this ticket. If there was then exiting the barriers does not in itself constitute a break of journey. Break of journey is defined as leaving station premises. Leeds station has many facilities on the station, including a JD Wetherspoon pub. Having a meal in the pub is NOT a break of journey. This means that, at certain stations, such as Leeds, unless they follow you, they could not enforce that restriction (where it applies) anyway.

If you prefer split tickets, split at Birmingham (BHM), Derby (DBY) and Sheffield (SHF), and as you say, remain on the train.

Thanks yorkie2 - to be honest I had no idea about how to reduce the price. Your suggestion is really useful.

Don't know if this one has been posted before (it didn't come up on a search) but Chester to Cardiff Central walk-on fares are £48.60 for one way or £54.70 return, but if you split at Hereford it works out as £39.90 one way or £42.30 return, so quite a saving.

Same train straight through, just buy two tickets.
    :D I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe :D

  • hello, does anyone know any split ticket routes to york? it would be hugely useful!!!

Yes, as I posted two days ago, split at Derby and Sheffield. :)

However you have not said when you are returning, or how early you are travelling, so I cannot advise on fares.

Not a huge saving but I was given these tickets when I asked for Patricroft to St Helens Junction last night (after 7pm)

Patricroft -> Earlestown Off Peak return (I was only going 1 way) £3.10
Earlestown -> St Helens Junction single £0.80

    Total cost £3.90

Patricroft -> St Helens Junction Single £5.20

    Saving £1.30

I said thank you to the conductor who suggested it :D
  • Hi,

I travel between glasgow central and london (euston normally with virgin trains) I was wondering if anyone has had any luck with ticket splitting on this route? I have tried a few different stations to split at ie carlisle but no luck so far.

    This works more for Advance tickets than walk on tickets;

Glasgow Queen st/Central to London Kings Cross via Edinburgh, you can also get a 10% discount on these advance tickets by buying from East Coast Website.

Glasgow to Preston or Manchester to London Euston, and if your really lucky you can buy a mobitix fare from Manchester to London.

  • ok will try these suggestions
