  • I travel a lot on the train from Hebden Bridge (which is on the local Caldervale Line). If I am making a long journey that takes me say to Glasgow or to London it is almost always cheaper to book a ticket from Leeds (for London) or from Preston (for Glasgow) and buy a sep ticket for the local line leg of the journey. I imagine this trick will work for anyone living on a local line and wanting to hook up with mainline services.

    Hope this helps someone

  • Can anyone tell me if there is a split route for Shenfield to Brighton for two weeks time? Even Liverpool St. to Brighton would be an option.

    Thank you!

Depends a lot on when exactly you are travelling and how flexible your arrangements need to be.

Having said that, there are Advance Singles available from London Victoria to Brighton on Thurs 23 November (two weeks time) for £3.75 each way when booked via Southern Railway's website.
    These tickets are often available.
Even cheaper if you have a railcard.

An Off Peak Return from Shenfield to Victoria (inc Underground) is £19.50.
A One Day Off Peak Return with Travelcard from Shenfield to Victoria is £15.20.

So whole trip can be as cheap as £22.70 return.

The opposite can be equally true - particularly in the London area where local fares are relatively expensive but can be next to nothing tacked on to a long distance ticket.

So it pays to check both options.

Edinburgh to Sheffield return 23-28th December

Two singles were £90 each but split at Newcastle and then at York and get each way for £36 (£7, £11.50, £17.50)

Saved £108! Perfect for christmas prezzy buying!

Very good - but would you really have bought two singles at £90 a time when a walkon return is £91 and a few pence?

Just wondering if anyone might be able to help. I need to go from Cheltenham Spa to Leeds on Tuesday 30th November and need to be in Leeds by 10.45. I am returning the same day any time after 2.30pm. Tickets for straight through return are coming out at just over £110! Might anyone know if I could be better off splitting the tickets and if so, where? Thank you in advance

It's possible that any or all of Birmingham Derby and Sheffield might help. Sorry a bit busy to look it up at the moment
