    thanks :)

With the splitting of advance tickets at Preston or Manchester, just make sure you give yourself plenty of time to make your connections (30-45mins)

The 'via Edinburgh' isn't a split just a different route, you just need to use the 'more options' in the search box of the East Coast website.

Forget about return fares and buy advance singles for the complete journey.

Example 21 Dec 1145 from Cambridge £17.50 single including underground transfer. £21 on a few more trains

Alternative (longer route) try splitting at Peterborough Leicester Birmingham and/or Cheltenham in any combination

Try splitting at Crewe. that way you could get 2 singles with the different operators.

If you leave Hereford half an hour later there's a through train which only arrives 12 minutes later and looks to have ready availability of advance tickets for the complete journey - even for tomorrow it's only £19

Depends on the ticket type - but try Stevenage. Anytime day returns are cheaper, off peak ones more expensive

Not sure if it's been mentioned, but some councils (such as those in Leicestershire) provide rail discounts/travel as part of their Concessionary Bus Pass schemes. In Leicestershire for example, gold-striped cards issued to Disabled persons include free rail travel *at all times* between any station in Leicestershire, and any other en-route to Derby, Grantham, Peterborough, Nuneaton and Kettering (note: one point of the journey *must* be in Leicestershire for this to be valid, either the beginnng or end of the journey).

The effect of this is, that it can be combined with normal tickets; this saves me £8 everytime I travel to London, as I only buy a ticket from Kettering - the section to Kettering is free.

I believe that blue-striped Pensioner cards only offer a 50% discount, but it's still worth having.

There is a helpful page buried on the National Rail website with a map and some information:

    http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/times_fares/Concessionary-Fares/Charnwood.html

For those outside of Leicestershire who hold one of these cards, it may well be worth enquiring to see if your council includes any rail concessions; unfortunately not all of them will, as it's not mandated by the statutory provision, it's optional, at the discretion of the issuing council.

On the Marches line last week (Arriva Trains Wales), a conductor was trying to tell someone they had to get off the train and get back on again with a split ticket, it just wasn't enforced. I'd love to know where that came from, because it isn't in the conditions of carriage.
