On the Marches line last week (Arriva Trains Wales), a conductor was trying to tell someone they had to get off the train and get back on again with a split ticket, it just wasn't enforced. I'd love to know where that came from, because it isn't in the conditions of carriage.

He either made it up or had been badly trained.

At worst you have to change from one reserved seat to another

I think they made it up - the conductor (a she) was refusing to sell a split ticket to someone on the train. The other reason she gave (the 2nd leg was from a staffed station so the ticket had to be purchased at a ticket office) seemed more plausible, but that one was stretching it.

Either way, they are mistaken. I'm a bit of a rail enthusiast; in a copy of RAIL magazine this was mentioned; you do *not* have to break the journey by stepping onto the platform, or anything similar. It has been mentioned in the rail industry internal magazine 'newsreel'.

    Just refuse to move. :-)

If you hear that happen, get the conductors name and report it to the operator. If you can't get the name, let the operator know which service it was on. They can get a big telling off for that.

I've heard a few reports of a guard being too strict on East Coast, the same name keeps popping up. I had the same guard the day after someone told me about him, so I know what he looks like now. I'll be keeping a close eye out for any further transgressions when I'm on his train. He has no excuses now as the company was giving him 'advice' so he should be acting correctly now.

I'd say "well, I am only buying that combination, and if you don't want to sell me a ticket, that's your choice!" if they tried to sell me the through ticket I would say "You are in breach of the Ticketing and Settlement Agreement (TSA); are you familiar with this?" If they said no I would say "This sets out clear obligations for your company to sell tickets impartially and correctly, and is an essential part of a franchise agreement. If you are not familiar with it, or refuse to comply with it, the matter will be reported to your superiors and you may face disciplinary action. I suggest you sell me the tickets I require, otherwise I will be making a formal complaint"

I hope you got her name, can you PM it to me please? I will do some enquiries; I know people who work for the company.
  • Hello everyone, I'm a bit stuck on splitting tickets for this route so any help would be appreciated.

    My normal route is:

West Malling - London Victoria - London Euston - Oxenholme - Kendal

But everywhere I try splitting the journey seems to make it more expensive! I will be traveling off-peak, one way, 3 Jan and a 'normal' single is £94.

    Thanks,
    Bearded

Advance single West Malling to Crewe £37.50
Anytime single Crewe to Kendal £36.00

It does involve an extra change - at Crewe

Thanks, thats great! In fact, by traveling a bit later in the day and (having to change at Preston too) I've now got advance tickets for both sections so it looks more like:

£37.50 Advance single West Malling to Crewe
£13.50 Advance single Crewe to Kendal
    £51 Total

    £94 Walk up single price
    £43 Saving

    Thanks again,
    Bearded

I am travelling to Edinburgh from Liverpool (any stations) on 14th January. I have currently got the price down to £26.50 using transpennine express, Liverpool to Manchester then Manchester to Edinburgh. Does anyone know of any other split ticketing that works for this route? The one train this is coming up for is ok but not ideal and as I've always got any time tickets in the past I'm worried about what happens if you miss it.

    thanks

Well there's a £29.50 through ticket, no split ticketing. Is the £3 saving for your split worth the hassle of possibly not being allowed on a later train regardless of the rights and wrongs of the situation?
  • I have tried a few combinations but my head is spinning so was hoping if someone could help me? I will be travelling from Colchester to Birmingham on Saturday 26th February. I need to arrive in Birmingham by around 12.30pm and would hope to get home by the last train of the day coming back into Colchester. Please help!!
