Cheapest I've seen so far is £110.80 for an offpeak rtn from reading to durham with Cross county trains. Could go from Kings Cross for about £94 but as it would cost me about £25 to travel to Kings Cross, not really worth it! Not really sure how to do the ticket splitting thing as I dont really know what stations the train stops at so was hoping a regular traveller might be able to tell me.
Any help or advise you could give would be great
By travelling out on Saturday and using Advance Singles you can reduce that to £96.70... out at £45.50 and back at £51.20.
To get that £51.20 ticket, you must book via East Coast Trains website, and that leg is via London.
Via London can be slightly quicker.
All fares are from Reading.0 -
That's the best flexible ticket you will find.

Am looking for a cheap train ticket to Durham, leaving either on Fri 8th Oct or sat 9th Oct, and returning on Sun 10th Oct. Flexible on times - would prefer to travel from Reading but if cheaper to go from London then will do. Anyone any ideas of cheap routes or best place to split ticket?
Any help appreciated.
Kelly:)
I do London - Durham about once or twice a week.
If you haven't already bought a ticket, try splitting at Peterborough as often there are cheap fares from Peterborough to Durham but a lot fewer from London to Durham. It sometimes works out cheaper to get cheap advance singles between PET and DHM and then a super off peak return between PET and KGX so if you're still looking, look at that too.0 -
I split the journey at Banbury, and got a return ticket for £47.40 (compared to £65 off peak).
Not only that, but following the advice "Only pay peak for the bit that is" I was able to travel at 8:15, which would normally cost £126!!!
And not only that, I got my £13 ticket to Grand Designs Live for free, using this site!
Great work. Thanks so much.0 -

Dep Darlington 10:05, arr Birmingham New Street 12:27. Advance Single = £34.00.
Short walk, five minutes, to Birmingham Moor Street.
Dep Moor Street 13:15, arr High Wycombe 14:53. Advance Single = £7.50.
Total = £41.50.
So... cheaper, starts later, takes longer.
Depends on your priorities.

So much good advice, so many useful ideas.
But how does one find in the 1741 letters spread over 88 pages details of fares on a specific route?0 -

If your talking about National Location Codes, then these need to be inputed into Avantix Traveller NFM 06 , NFM 07 or Avantix Mobile this will then give you all the fare and route options for that specific route.

Hi all, can I pick your brains please? I need to get from Cardiff Central to Manchester Airport on the afternoon/evening of the 17th December, earliest I can depart is probably 1600. (one way journey, 16-25 railcard). At the moment I've considered going into Birmingham, hopping to Wolverhampton and going from there, but it's still coming out at £25 plus. I know it wouldn't be dirt cheap but every little helps, right?0
