I have a family railcard and myself and daughter going to helston on monday 30th august to friday 3rd september, cheapest fare I can find is £59.20, no matter where I have tried to split the tickets it still comes out dearer, can anyone else help as I have been trying now for over 6 hours.:(
This seems like a tricky route to get savings at short notice. I've managed to get it down to £56 return, it isn't great, but every little helps! Theoretically, you may be able to save a couple of pounds more using Advance tickets, but I think the extra flexibility is worth it as the difference is so marginal.
Portsmouth stations - Plymouth £43 Off Peak Return
Plymouth - Redruth/Penzance £13 Off Peak Return
Sorry I couldn't have been of more help!0 -
I'm taking a friend to London in November for a few days, (from newcastle) can't find a split ticket option on the way down, but on the way back if I split at doncaster it comes out £8.50 cheaper. However when I told my friend this she raised an interesting point - are we likely to be allocated different seats for the two parts of the journey if I split ticket? Just with her poor mobility and the luggage we'll be taking, plus the fact that it's East Coast, so you have no choice but to be allocated seats, and the train we're coming back on is likely to be busy because of timing, it might be worth paying the extra £8.50 just to be able to stay in the same seats all the way!
Thanks in adavnce to anyone who can answer this.OS weight loss challenge: 4.5/6 lbs0 -

Split the journey in Didcot Parkway
Note: Only half of the trains stop at Didcot from Bath (every hour)- but if you miss the didcot train, get on the next London train then wait at swindon for the next train that goes to paddington via Didcot!
.
I use this as routine from Chippenham. The other advantage is that Didcot Parkway is just into the Network (South East) Railcard territory, thus reducing the cost for that leg further. An off-peak day return to London with Zone 1 to 6 Railcard (which will get me to Crystal Palace games) therefore costs me £27.20, as opposed to just over £50.0 -
Thought I'd share a split I've just been forced to find as I have to go from Darlington to Kings Cross as a day return tomorrow and no sensible advance fares are available.
Standard super off peak return fare is £100.40 - however if you are coming back the same day, you can get day returns for Darlington - York, York - Doncaster, Doncaster - Peterborough and Peterborough - Kings X - works out at £85.50 rather than £100.40.
A saving of £14.90 - not bad (as long as you have to come back on the same day).
Cheers,

I'm looking for the cheapest way of getting from Edinburgh to Cambridge on Tuesday October 26th, one way. Two adults each with a Young Persons Railcard. I have looked on NXEC and found the cheapest seems to be at 5:50am for £40.50 but we don't want to travel this early. Any good split routes that would make it cheaper?
Thanks0 -

Try Peterborough - it may or may not work0 -

The £40.50 is an advance single with a 10% online discount, I doubt you'll find cheaper than that, but if the fare dzug1 quoted is at a better time for you I would buy it before it disappears, bear in mind a super off peak single is a £141 it's still a good saving.Whoa! I am looking at going from LLanelli to Paddington on 29th November returning on 3rd December. If I leave Llanelli on the 9.30 am and return from Paddington on the 13.45 pm I can get it for £45 return. I have tried splitting at Didcot but this costs more. Any thoughts.0

Could you travel a bit later as, dep LLanelli 12.29 arriving London 16.09 is available for £13 so a return journey for £26 ?
Or the 10.29 arrive 14.06 for £17 so £30 return?Whoa! This image violates our terms of use and has been removed from view0
