You cannot be refused a split ticket as long as you meet the conditions that the trains you catch stop at the splitting point.
Unless the office is actually physically unable to do this, but it's unlikely to be the case.
(some stations in London may not be able to do it if it's operated by London Underground but this obviously doesn't apply in your case)

Heswall station has no staff according to the National rail datasheet on the station

Whether the guy on the train will have a machine capable of selling a ticket from Shrewsbury to Abergavenny I don't know.

If he professes ignorance you have time at Wrexham to buy that second ticket.

You could try splitting at Sunderland (£79 offpeak return) or York (£69 off peak return) with Grand Central Trains and see what's available for the rest of the journey. Sunderland - Newcastle is about £3 each way standard fare. York will be more

The Grand Central tickets can be bought on the train - you don't need to book in advance for them

Otherwise I think you've left it a bit late for a good fare

    hi everyone,
i'm looking to travel from london to durham on either 2nd sep evening or 3rd sep early morning and return on sunday. so far i have found i can travel on friday 06:15 to darlington for £11.15 then it's only £4 single to durham from there. but the return journey is £28.40 from durham direct to london.
does anyone know of a better split journey than this?

    thanks
    neil
  • Hi all, I'm a student who is going to be living at home and travelling from Shawford-Portsmouth. I really need to find the cheapest way of getting from my house to Portsmouth Uni. If anyone knows of a split route it would be much appreciated. Thanks

If your eligible then get a 16-25 Railcard, brings the Anytime day return down to £6.45 or if you can travel Off peak £6.40 :D

£9.70 is the price of an Off Peak Day Return.
£9.80 for an Anytime Return if you want to get to P'mouth before 10:46.

A 16-26 railcard will bring that down to £6.40, but you can't get to Portsmouth before 11:46 at that price.

Alternatively, would a season ticket be suitable?
£48.00 per week (for five days thats £9.60 per day).
    £184.40 per month.

wealdroam, something not right here, I've just been on the East coast website and it say the 16-25 railcard is valid Shawford to Pompy for an Anytime Day return £6.45, therefore arriving into Pompy 07:12 and onwards.

    Have I missed something?

I think you may have missed something. ;)

I used East Coast too and for the rest of August you are correct.

But if you set the date to a weekday in September, you will also see a 'Anytime Day Return with 16-25 Railcard at £12.00'.

A £12.00 minimum fare with a 16-25 railcard before 10am on Monday-Friday applies... except during July and August.

I didn't bother mentioning this because OP is a uni student, and I assumed he wouldn't start travelling in August.
