  • Hey all. I'm going to have to live in Guildford for a few months, though my job is still in Brighton. So far I've found £13.05 return with my YPR, which is cheaper per month than the season ticket! (£282.75 vs £335.30 for a Season Ticket).

Anyone got any ideas on how to get that down further? The journey crosses two rail operators, so I'm wondering if I could split it and save even more..

Are you intending to travel peak times?
If so there is a minimum fare with a 16-25 railcard of £12.
So splitting will not be a good option.

Although that £12 min is not applicable in August.
Still, a split will be more expensive.

OK so here's a challenge for you. See if you can do any better than me - if you can, it might prevent me from taking the car instead!

Darlington to London, Friday 13th August, need to be there by 11:30am, returning after 6pm (hopefully before the 9pm train from Kings X). No railcard, 31 years old.

Cheapest non-split fare I've found is £158.50 - morning single £108.50 plus evening advance fare of £50. Splitting at Grantham works out at £93.30 (off peak return for £63.30 DAR - GRA then off peak day return for £30 GRA-KGX which gets me in at 11:14 but involves a change in Doncaster on the return).

I use this route regularly and used to easily split at Peterborough for cheap advance fares between there and Darlington (and then get a super off peak return for £37-odd for the PET-KGX leg) but the cheap DAR-PET advance tickets that used to be available up until maybe 2-3 days beforehand have now completely gone unless booking weeks and weeks in advance. Has anyone else noticed that there now seem to be far fewer cheap(er) advance fares on the East Coast route?

Anyway if anyone has got any other suggestions on how I might get to london and back for less than £93 on Friday (preferably by train) I'd appreciate it.

    Thanks!
  • If you're heading to Heathrow from Wales and the West avoid the RailAir link......

For example, an advance single from Bristol to Heathrow costs from £28.50. You change at Reading onto the RailAir link coach.

You can do the same journey for £9.70. Buy a rail ticket to Hayes and Harlington (changing trains at Reading) and then catch the 140 bus. The 140 is frequent, leaves from outside the station and takes 10 to 15 minutes.

An advance single from Bristol to Heathrow costs from £8.50. The bus fare is £1.20 with an Oystercard (or £2 if you pay cash).
  • Swindon - Chester
For travel on Thursday 9th September to be in Chester for lunchtime I couldn't find through tickets cheaper than £56 each way, £112 return. By split ticketing I've got:
    OUT: Swindon - Newport £11 + Newport-Chester £11 = £22
    RETURN: Chester -B'ham £13 -Cheltenham £14.50 -Swindon £3.00= £30.50
    Total £52.50

I've got approx 20 mins between each of my trains, so hopefully won't be caught out by any delays.

This info might be of help if your delayed for more than 20 mins and then miss your connection, might help to take a print out. It's from another thread about someone missing his connection, travelling with 2x advance singles

But I will back up my argument with some quotes:-

    http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/times_fares/advance_conditions.html

"If delays occur while travelling, you will be allowed to take the next available train(s) to complete your journey.
    "

    http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/system/galleries/download/misc/NRCOC.pdf

"You may use two or more tickets for one journey as long as together they cover the entire journey...."

    I think that's pretty conclusive.

    Quote:
The Unfair Terms in Consumer Contracts Regulations 1999

    Written contracts
    7. - (2) If there is doubt about the meaning of a written term, the interpretation which is most favourable to the consumer shall prevail

    http://www.opsi.gov.uk/si/si1999/19992083.htm
I think it's clear, but if it is not clear, the consumer should win.

Are you planning on returning the same day?
If so, can be done for fifty pence less, but perhaps more importantly, without any splitting and the potential associated risks.

Whether they're suitable or not depends in part on your lunchime. ;)

Dep Swindon 09:13, arr Chester 13:12. Advance Single = £26.00.
Dep Chester 17:55, arr Swindon 22:18. Advance Single = £26.00.

    Info from East Coast Trains.
  • I'm looking to travel from Heswall to Abergavenny on Thursday 19th around lunchtime, returning sometime on Monday 23rd to be back at latest for tea (I can't book a specific time).

    An Off-Peak Return is £48.60
    2 Trains: 13:41 Heswall - Wrexham & 14:38 Wrexham - Abergavenny via Shrewsbury

    I can split at Shrewsbury

    Off-Peak Return: Heswall - Shrewsbury £14.40
    Off-Peak Return: Shrewsbury - Abergavenny £24.40
    Total: 38.80 Saving £9.80

Will the staff at Heswall be 'happy' to print out the split-tickets for me if I turn up early and explain what I'm doing?

Or is there a better way to make the journey?

    Rog. :)
