Single ticket from Taunton to Bournmouth will cost you around £35. Buying the same ticket and along the same route from Taunton to Southampton will cost £14, plus an extra £5 from Southampton to Bournmouth. total £19, giving a saving of £16.
Not quite. Buying 'the same ticket' from Taunton to Southampton is around £28 plus £10 on to Bournemouth - that is tickets you can walk up and buy on the day. So no saving.
Your tickets must be bought in advance and are not available on all trains. Still a useful saving if the times suit and they are available.0 -
I'm currently in the process of booking one from Leeds to Bristol and it's an absolute nightmare of an expense, even with relevant student discount cards, it would cost me roughly £110. And for us students who always seem to lack money, this is an unpleasant cost!
Splitting at Derby on the way there got it down to £33 there, straight return back the day after, only cost £22. The madness of the rail networks...
Overall though a £110 has been cut cleanly in half as it's down to just £55 and that's with rail card.0 -
Cardiff to paddington quoted £121 single fare got this reduced to £12 single fare each way total cost £24 split the ticket to didcot the only thing is you have to travel on the specific trains and time0

Does ticketing spliting really still work for actual journeys, whre I don't have to change the time of day that I travel or book far in advance?
Love to hear about real experiences..?0 -

Yes it does - but it's not universal. Most of the time you have to accept that the through fare is cheapest
Cheltenham to Exeter is cheaper by around £10 rebooking at Bristol on walk on flexible off peak tickets as one example.0 -

Yes, it does work, its a matter of how much time you want to invest in finding all the correct/best split points.
My fav: Inverkeithing to Glasgow Queen St Off Peak day Return £17.10. Split @ Edinburgh £14.80 saving £2.30Whoa! This image violates our terms of use and has been removed from view0 -
Hi
can anyone help me please? I'm trying to get to London from Durham on 9th October and returning on 10th October. There seem to be no cheap advance singles for these dates at all. Tonnes for Friday and Monday but as that would mean another night in London its not going to be feasible. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks

Yep
Wait for the cheap fares for the weekend to be released. Currently that's only until the last weekend in September.0 -
Thanks for that! I'll keep a beady eye out!0
