  • I was looking to book 2 return train tickets from Great Yarmouth to Manchester for end of August and the cheapest return was £316.00 for both on trainline.
I split the tickets at Nottingham. Checked the train companies direct website.
The remainder of the journey was cheaper to purchase via the direct site.
I paid £84 for both which is a saving of £232!!!

  • Had some great advice here in the past, thanks.

Now looking to get from Cambridge to Blackpool (single) on Fri 6th August after 13:30. Cheapest I'm getting is £69 - not great.

Can go to Blackpool North or South or even Preston if necessary (and get a lift).

Any advice to get the price down?

Found Peterborough to Blackpool North for £29.50 - I could get a lift to Peterborough possibly.

    Can anyone do any better?

I think there should be a part on the MSE website where we can enter split ticket routes into a database, for people to be able to search - sound like a good idea?

I could myself make a website that does this externally, but I'm sure it'd be a features of MSE many users would love!

York seems to be the fare splitting capital of the UK!

I have another one - Warrington to Newcastle. Split at York. You will be travelling with Transpennine Express on both legs - leave an hour or so to change in York and pray you don't miss the connection. If you don't split you usually find the cheapest fare is off peak return - split and you will qualify for advance tickets. I saved 50% last time I travelled - £60 for two people!

I suspect the same may apply to Liverpool to Newcastle as well.

    What have you found?

Can be done at £36 each way, providing you have dinner in the evening. ;)

Another option to Keithp's direct advance tickets, is that you split advance tickets at Stockport, means a longer journey and the risks involved with split advanced tickets, which have been highlighted in a recent thread in this forum but this can be slightly overcome by ensuring 30-45 mins connection time at Stockport.

The journey can be done for under £20 each way

  • hi there, i've been trying to find day return train tickets from colwyn bay down to london euston for 3 people. the best i have found is £57 per person. Just wandering if anyone has found a cheaper alternative because i'm sure there is a cheaper fare out there.

18th September. preferably around 0700, and leaving around 1800

    thats £25 to euston
    £32 back to colwyn bay

i'd be grateful if anyone can do any better (which im sure you can lol)

    thanks, Dave

    How about...

Anytime Day Return Colwyn Bay to Crewe = £21.40.
Dep Crewe 08:33, arr Euston 11:49. Advance Single =£8.00.
Dep Euston 17:40, arr Crewe 19:10. Advance Single = £11.00.

Total for one person = £40.40.

But that outward leg does take a little longer.

    Detail from East Coast Trains.
