    Hi,

I need to go from London to Ormskirk on 21st May, returning 24th May.

Cheapest fare is £66.10 return. Can anyone give any advise on a cheaper fare.. I'm new to all this train stuff!!

    Thanks,

Advance Singles at £17.00 are available on a couple of trains for the return leg.
If you don't mind leaving Euston at 05:27, the outward leg is also £17.00.
An outward Advance Single is more generally available at £31.00.

So can be done for £34.00.

    Info from East Coast Trains.

What you have found is the standard off peak return fare that you can buy on the day. Have you looked for two singles? You can shade a bit off it but not much if you are flexible on timings

There is another - much cheaper - way which you can buy on the day but involves using the sloooww London Midland service, A superoffpeak return is £24.00. You are not committed to specific trains, just to avoiding peak hours

That's to Liverpool - then buy a local ticket to Ormskirk. £4.15 single.

London Midland's own site is the best way to find this fare - the others can be cajoled into showing it but it varies how.

If you can get a through cheap advance ticket for the complete journey then that's usually best - however they seem to be sold out/were never available for your dates.

That leaves a multitude of splits to try

Any or all of Exeter Bristol Cheltenham Birmingham Wolverhampton Crewe Preston are some to try. I'm not game to do it

It's also just possible that going via and splitting in London might be cheaper and not much difference in speed

Don't pay more than £140.50, which is the walkon off peak return fare

You ask a very similar question (elsewhere) a few days ago...

Not sure of your dates. I went on www.eastcoast.co.uk and picked the 16th June and could see one ticket for £54 (single). Usual advice about railcards applies if you qualify for one.

Splitting at Birmingham New Street or Preston may help.

£140.50 is the walk-up return fare.

How did you get on with that?

    Hi all

OH is working in Birmingham and commuting to Glasgow at weekends. Travel costs are killing us so any help appreciated. Would be travelling from Stafford on Sat. mornings to Glasgow and from Glasgow to /birmingham on first train Monday mornings. Not always possible to book too far in advance either due to flexibility with job. Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance

    Cheaper than what?

What have you found so far?

Can be done for £27.60 each way on those dates. Without splitting.
