Last year, I would fly outside of London for the day and return that evening. I used to be able to get the off peak day return train fare which was really nice. almost 50% the regular return fare. Later on, I didn't return the same day but now I started to do so. At first, I started using trainline again to buy tickets so I didn't notice immediately the off peak fare was no longer available. They have stopped offering this off peak or same day return fares for airport journeys Anyway, I did what Martin has suggested for other types of train fares and I broke up the journey into 2 tickets and it is not as cheap as it was before but there is still about a 33% savings off the best RT fare.
Don't pay more than you have to!!

Perfectly valid... as long as the trains you are travelling on stop at Perth.

I travel this route regularly and always buy two singles for the journey as it works out cheaper with an advance ticket. Glasgow - Inverness £14.80 ( same price for a single advance ticket on the return journey)

It is also useful to phone the scotrail booking line as they will search or trains on the day of travel for the cheapest fair - this has saved me quite a bit of time too.

Leicester to Bristol for £21.80 when they wanted £54.50.
    Leicester to Birmingham - £6.50
    Birmingham to Cheltenham - £8.00
Cheltenham to Bristol Temple Meads - £7.30

    = more money for beer!

Thanks for that info, Muppet, and well done for making a saving.

Unfortunately that comparison isn't really fair.
That £54.50 is the Anytime Single fare from Leicester to Bristol TM.
You have used Advanced Singles in your comparison for parts of the journey.
An Advance Single is available from Leicester to Bristol TM at various prices. Allegedly as low as £15.00, but often for only £23.00.

So perhaps your opening sentence should be...
Leicester to Bristol for £21.80 when they wanted £23.00.

But hey, that's still a saving.

Hi, Ive just spent the best part of an hour working through my journey and really cannot get the price down to less than £160. And now my head hurts!

I need to get 2 adults and 1 child (10) from Exeter to London. Can buy a railcard if needs be, would prefer 1st class travel.

    30 May returning 31 May.

Would like to leave Exeter early (before 10am) and return from London after 4pm if possible, but am flexible on timings.

Anyone care to point me in the best direction. THank you.

P.S I did search this thread or EXETER but it won't let me look at pages 2 and 3 of the search?

Going to London First Class isn't a problem as the 09:49 from St Davids costs £66.25 for 2 adults & a child with Family & Friends Railcard

Returning is £52.50 on the 19:20 train.

    Total cost £118.75

2nd Class BTW is £39.25 on the 09:26 to London and £18.10 on the 20:35 from London

There isn't a split as all the trains are direct

Thank you, where do I see this journey? Ive gone bonkers looking at all the train timetables! I take it, this ISN't a split.
