Thanks dzug!, that was mightily fast replying! It is 2 adults and one child, with a family r/c. I had been told we could do it for around 50/60 bothways, but I found nothing less than 90. As you rightly point out, it's not worth booking yet I just thought I'd stick the toe in the water.

Well a buy on the day off peak return ticket for 2 adults and one child with a railcard is £93.45 - that's the worst case.

You should be able to get it for less - probably a lot less - if you book soon after the cheap tickets come out. That will be a maximum of 12 weeks before travel - maybe less.

For example on 17/18 March there are quite a few trains that would be £54.40 return. Ditto in mid-April.

    Car Insurance Carver!
I'm looking for 16 tickets for a stag do from Newcastle to Liverpool (Aintree to be exact but Liverpool Central would be fine) leaving July 9th and returning July 11th. I haven't been on a 'proper' train haha since I was a kid...can anyone help? Cheapest I've found is £452 return (for 8 people) which is canny expensive!

You are trying to book far too early to get cheap tickets. What you've found is the fare you would pay on the day.

Try 12 weeks before travel but don't panic if nothing is there for a while after that

http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/times_fares/booking_horizons.html shows you what has been released.

£10 each way is possible, but of course depends on date and time.

£20 each way isn't too bad when you consider an Off Peak Return is £74.

Cannot think it is worth trying splitting.

Try megatrain - from £5 each way - possibly even £1 if you are lucky

I looked on their website but they don't go early enough in the morning for me to use them outbound, but might be a goer for the return on the sunday.

    Thanks!

    Anyother suggestions folks???

    Yes, I made one... above.

But it looks like you want to peak time, which reinforces my view that £20.00 is a good price.
  • Sorry I did see your suggestion that £20 was a good deal. Thanks.

Sadly I've just gone back on trainline now I have the times that I need to get to London for and the earliest time I can leave (it is a hen do) it now looks like the best I'm going to do is £52 (£26 each way).

A saver return valid for any train is £54.30 so I'm thinking I'll go for that and have added flexibility. The train I'd ideally like to get on the way there is not one of the £26 ones and I am slightly worried about times coming back, I don't want to risk missing my train if I have a restricted ticket but don't want to be sitting round the station for ages if I buy a later one to be on the safeside. £2.30 extra seems reasonable for flexibility/peace of mind/convenience.

So, are there anyways to get any discounts or cashback on a super off peak return ticket? I am of course booking using a cashback creditcard.

    Thanks!
