hi all - my brother wants to go from Burgess Hill (Sussex) to Newcastle and back and knew of my previous with Uncle Martin so asked me to check it out so, short story long, "cheap" return ticket - £169 - but:- Burgess Hill to London Victoria £3; oyster card to Kings Cross, then single to Newcastle £46; - return = single from Newky to Retford £13.50; Retford to Kings X £20; oyster to Victoria then £3 special back to Burgess Hill all done on line ('cept for oyster card (topped up one already owned but new one bought in London is £8)) first and last leg through Southern Rail £6 - London/Newky/back through Trainline £79.50 (could be cheaper but would mean quite a long wait 'tween trains) and all tickets ('cept oyster) picked up at start point, £1 booking fee for the lot - about 80 smakeroonies to spend on sunnink else  and always remember - every little helps Tescos:mad:

Oh dear, someone else that needlessly spent £1 more then they had to. Buy the lot through Southern or East Coast and avoid the booking fee.
Did you really mean to put loose?
Lose: no longer possess, not to retain, unable to find
Loose: not firmly or tightly fixed in place

Hi everyone, I am hoping to find the cheapest way to travel from Carlisle to Newquay in time for a dental appointment, and then immeadiately returning to Carlisle. I'd like to find the tickets before booking the appointment, anytime in March or April will be fine.

    Any ideas? thanks

I would expect that advance singles Carlisle to Euston, Paddington to Newquay and back will be cheapest. Availability direct via Birmingham/Bristol is very poor though in theory cheaper.

I really doubt you are going to be able to do it all in one day though.

That's ok, I don't mind sleeping on the train, or it taking 2 days, thank you

I'm sure a dentist in Carlisle will be cheaper though, but that's up to you.

Thanks Dzug, I'm looking at setting off after midnight Tuesday 30th March , Via Euston & Paddington to Newquay, and then back in Carlisle 5am Wednesday, £125 all advance singles.

Are there any Railcards for your average joe that would make it cheaper, do you know?

    Manchester to Cardiff?
Hi all, I'm taking the family to Cardiff, not until October (9th, to be precise). Just having a quick look at prices and I seem to be struggling to find anything like reasonable. I know the cheaper tickets aren't released yet, but can anybody advise me on the best way to get these at the right time?

Well what do you regard as reasonable? Even for next week the journey can be done for for between £12 and £26 single per adult depending on how fussy you are about times. It's not a route that sells out that fast. I'd forget about booking until July or August at the earliest.

A Family and Friends railcard would probably help as well: for example a walkon return for 2 adults and 2 children is £105 with a railcard.
