Split Ticketing: Report successful routes here

Hi all,

I'm looking for the cheapest way to get from York to Whitstable (or close, eg. Canterbury, Faversham) and back.

Open Return is £98.60 (travelling 9th Feb)

I found this for £59.60 using Advance Singles:
York to Faversham
Outward: 17:21, Tue 9 Feb 2010
Return: 18:58, Thu 11 Feb 2010

Can anyone suggest a better option?

Travelling on exactly the same trains, I cannot find a saving on the outward leg, but a small saving can be made by splitting your ticketing at Peterborough on the return portion.
Advance Single Faversham to Peterborough = £16.00.
Advance Single Peterborough to York = £11.55.
Saving = £2.25.

If you can be a bit flexible on both the out and return legs a slightly greater saving can be made.

Dep York 20:09, arr Peterborough 21:20. Advance Single = £11.55.
Dep Peterborough 21:21, arr Faversham 00:03. Advance Single = £16.00.
11 Feb...
Dep Faversham 19:58, arr Peterborough 22:46. Advance Single = £16.00.
Dep Peterborough 22:47, arr York 00:41. Advance Single = £8.50.

So it can be done for £52.05.
In all these scenarios there is no need to change trains at Peterborough.

To get these fares the tickets must be booked via the East Coast Trains website.

Thanks. So, splitting at Peterborough seems to be the best option.

I can be pretty flexible - just popping down to see my sister and to look at a car. So, I might not need to return ticket. Are those ticket prices likely to be available for next-day travel do you think?

No-one can predict that, but looking at availability on 3/4 Feb, most of those fares are there... but not all of them. Meaning that any saving by splitting may be lost.

Of course the non-split Advance Singles may not be available nearer the date either.

2 adults each with a young persons railcard. Going on March 27th around midday, returning March 28th around 10am.

Well that isn't quite the full story... I'd assumed you had checked.

According to National Rail Enquiries, East Midland trains have only released Advance Singles for Sunday services up until 18 March.
Which is why you cannot find any on your Sunday.

Sorry - didn't mean to sound so abrupt.

Last time it seemed there were never any advance singles on a Sunday - from a quick check a few weeks ahead it sounds as though that may no longer be true (eg Nott-Peterboro £5.95 on 21 Feb) so could be worth checking nearer the time.
They've been released (officially) to 11 April, but that doesn't look to be true. (18 March is the London route - this is the Norwich route)
