  • Hi, does anyone know why there are no advance tickets for Peterborough to Nottingham on a Sunday?

We are planning on going from Cambridge to Nottingham on Sat March 27th returning Sun 28th March, 2 adults travelling both with young persons railcards. I know that the advance tickets won't be available yet, but have looked at other weekend i.e in February and there are only advance on the Sat not Sundays for the P'Boro to Notts leg. (using First Great Western)
  • Hi there, just found this useful thread, I'm going from London to Glasgow on Monday the 25th Jan although prices seem a bit steep. Does anyone with experience of this journey know the best stations to split, im a bit confused, thanks in advance.

    Define "a bit steep".
What have you found so far?

There are Advance Singles that day which will get you there for under £50... from £35.00 to £48.05 depending on time of day.

Splitting at Crewe and using a 'London Midland Trains only' Advance Single from Euston to Crewe, and another Advance Single onwards to Glasgow can reduce that fare further.... at the expense of travelling time though.

Info from East Coast Trains website.
  • Thanks Keith, not sure if I've missed the boat here, £60 single is all I can see on the national rail site, thats direct from Lond - Glas, If I put in Crewe to Glasgow, the last train of the night is £17 leaving at 20:09, Am I on the right lines here? lol

The Advance Singles I saw on 16Jan are still there.
Why not try the link I gave? It will show five trains leaving London before 9am with Advance Singles less than £50. Some need to be booked via East Coast Trains to get the under £50 price.
Other cheap departures from London Kings Cross 15:00 or 18:00 for £48.05.

You seem to have found one train... lol.
Earlier ones at 12:09, 16:09 and 18:09 are £30.50, and the 19:09 departure is £21.50.
Combine these with a possible £11.00 London Midland Trains only Advance Single and its a cheap fare.
  • Thanks again Keith, I see what you're getting at now.
I've decided on the Euston to Crewe 18:10 - 19:53 train (Virgin to Holyhead)
then Crewe to Glasgow 20:09 - 23:17 train (Virgin Brum - Ggow)

£29 to Crewe then £17 on to Glasgow with a smoke break in between!
    4Hrs 51mins  cheers!

Good call - but be aware that if your Euston to Crewe train is late for any reason and you miss the VT you're booked on from Crewe, your second ticket won't be valid so don't get on a later one without buying another ticket first as you'll get a hefty fine if you do!
  • Hi folks, long time lurker but first post.

I'm looking to go to Sheffield from either Glasgow or Edinburgh (live roughly halfway between) on 10 April and back on 11 April. Where's the best place to split the journeys from either station to minimise cost? I don't have any railcards.

    Thanks

    Synex, welcome to the forums.

What's the best price you have found so far?

I'd mainly been checking Edinburgh and coming up with £83 return, but I've checked going from Glasgow and splitting at Preston I can get it for £48- I'd settle for that but if I can get it lower then great!
