Tip 1. Don't use trainline.con as they charge cheeky booking fees buy from a Train Company ie Virgin trains or East coast trains
Tip 2. You a bit early for the cheap advance singles check here to see when their released
Tip 3. Family and Friends Railcard will help, keep checking the MSE forum for discount codesWhoa! This image violates our terms of use and has been removed from view0 -

This National Rail website will give you an idea when cheap tickets become available.
Try using the East Coast Trains website to find trains. I find it one of the easiest to use.
Btw... avoid the trainline's fees by booking with an operator, like East Coast Trains.
As an example it is possible to do that trip for £101.40 for a similar period at the beginning of March.
And that fare drops to £61.25 with at Family and Friends Railcard (which costs £26.00 at the moment).
Those prices are the total for all three of you.0 -

A railcard is near certain to save its cost.
No need to rush out and buy one though - you only need it when you travel, not to buy the tickets
And as livingthedream says - wait for the cheap tickets anyway.0 -

I need to get from London to Bolton on the 15th Jan, leaving around 6pm. The cheapest single ticket is £75 (1st Class) or £86 standard class direct. I can split in Manchester and it comes down to £57 (Std) or £60 (1st), which is a hell of a difference when the Manchester to Bolton standard fare is £2.90. Or I can wait until 7pm and it comes down to £65. But I found several options by splitting the ticket in Stafford or Stoke, and then again in Manchester, where I have to change anyway, which brings it down to £35. This does mean changing to Crosscountry in Stafford and staying on the same train in Stoke, so its adds a little time to the journey. Another option is to split at Crewe, stay on the same fast Virgin train, and again in Manchester.for £40.
It does take some time to work out the best deals, and is pretty complicated if there are loads of options, but it is worth it. Incidentally, if you have to travel same day, and can use the off-peak ticket, I found the standard return ticket from London to Bolton (I was stranded in December and not expecting to have to get a train) is only £1 more than the single so I got the outbound to London next week for £1 in effect (have to use within a month).0 -

Or if cost is everything, and you've got plenty of time, try this on 15 Jan...
Dep Euston 18:13, arr Stafford 21:09. Advance Single 'London Midland Trains only' £13.00.
Dep Stafford 21:30, arr Man Picc 22:35. Advance Single £6.50.
Dep Man Picc 22:50, arr Bolton 23:15. Off Peak Single £2.90 (as you said).
Total = £22.40.0 -
I know my dates are too early to buy (Dep Fri 26/06 Rtn Sun 28/06) but what's the best ticket splits to look for on this route?
Dundee to Bristol (Parkway preferable but OK with Temple Meads) for 2 adults and 2 kids - got a Family Railcard.
Had a quick look and the cheapest "advertised fare" is from £35.70 each way or £243.70 return.
I know the preferred route would be the direct Cross Country train, so really looking for ticket splits to suit this. Have been picking random dates to match the days of travel and we're pretty much looking at the standard return fare as being the cheapest!!!
Thanks for any advice offered.0
