  • Any idea knowledgeable people about where is best to get cheapest train fare for this journey, going on Fri 12th March, back Sunday 14th March??
I'll be really grateful for help, it seems a really expensive journey.
  • Hello all

I don't just wanna come here and say FIND ME A TICKET blah blah

But how do you guys find out WHERE you can split tickets? I can't work out how you know what to do, without literally trawling through hundreds of possible train stations!

I want to get from London to Liverpool Lime St on Feb 6th, and I'm being quoted (using std methods) £70 each!! !!!!!!? When did it get so dear!! Think I'm getting old. All this used to be fields etc

I've found, using the search facility on here, Euston to Crewe, but I don't think I can make the times it offers

Anyone got any suggestions? Or, any maps whereby I can see at what stations we could potentially change at?

    Thanks in advance

Well initially yes it does potentially mean trawling through dozens of combinations. But then you come to know which are likely to yield results and stop bothering with the rest.

    In your case -

try Brum - it's a slightly longer journey but can be (not necessarily IS) cheaper.

Or if you are prepared for a much slower journey try the London Midland site and use their trains only.

It's not a question of WHERE to look. All the sites should if you ask them the right question in the right way (OK maybe not always obvious) give you exactly the same fare. Using the site of the company that operates the trains sometimes gives you a discount on some ticket types, but that's it. It's what you ask rather than where you ask that makes the main difference.

You may get a cheaper fare by splitting at any or all of Sheffield Leeds York and Newcastle and the East Coast and East Midland sites are the ones to try.

    But weekend travel IS expensive.
  • I cant get cheaper than £158 for a family of six from Hitchin,Herts to southampton. 26th of March for 4 days. Is it too early for booking them or am i doing it wrong? i have two cards, family rail and network rail as well.

Let's assume that the return trip is on Tues 30 March.

Also your other post indicates that the party of six is four adults and two children.
Off Peak Returns for that party with F&F Railcard from Hitchen to Kings Cross will be £73.90.

As Dzug said elsewhere, seriously think about Megatrain for Waterloo to Southampton bit.
There are no tickets yet for 26/30 March, but an earlier Fri/Tues, 12/16 March, shows many tickets at £1.00 per head each way (plus £0.50 booking fee).
I suppose it is possible that no £1 tickets will become available for the dates you want.

So total return for all six of you could be as low as £86.40... plus of course your cross London travel... a taxi may be as good as anything.

By the way... Off Peak Returns with F&f Railcard from Hitchin to Southampton for your whole party is £135.90. That includes cross London tube fares.
Don't know where you got £158 from.

I am sure i done it group save. I am not very good at this sort of thing. But with what you have put i am going to look and see how you have done it. I hope megatrain do do the dates i want well worth a daily check.
    Thank you very much x

Keith i did thank Dzug and i have asked for that thread to be removed. I thought it was the best place to post when i first looked. I am not sure if it can be removed or can i delete it myself? If so how ? I apologize for the multi posting.
( the above is meant in an apologetic manner not sarcastic)

I have looked at Megatrain this morning, registered and tried to see if they had the dates as you say there isn't any. I didn't realise it was a Webb page in its own right till i saw it highlighted in blue in your posting, as i am not very computer savvy but thankfully there are a lot like yourself who dont mind helping and directing to the right place and for that i am very grateful.

Have done well this morning with split ticketing.

Was looking for Cambridge - Sheffield, departing 12th March, going back on the 15th March, changes at Leicester.
Normally £57 on an open return.

First leg - Cambridge to Leicester - £6.50 single
    Dep Cambridge 10am, arrive 11.47
    via Cross Country Trains
Leicester to Sheffield - £1 on Megabus. Depart 13.04, arrive Sheffield, 14.04

On the way back, 15th March,
Depart Sheffield 13.27, arrive Leicester, 14.27 - £1 again on Megabus.

Leicester to Cambridge - £6.50 single ticket on Cross Country trains.
This fare is valid for several options not during peak time.

    Total cost £15 !!! Saving of £42!

Thats one expensive route for advance tickets, had a quick look for tickets in April and the price is around £109 one way for the both of you.

you could try splitting at Manchester Pic and using advance tickets this brings the price down to £104 return for the both of you, but make sure you leave plenty of time to make you connections at Manchester (At least 45-60mins).

Another option is splitting at London and again using advance tickets, this works out at around £112 return for the both of you including cross London transfer, but you need to go Glasgow to London via Edinburgh and use the East Coast site to get a 10% disount on that ticket.

And use this website to see when the cheap advance tickets are released, at the moment there up to April 23rd.
