Hello i have managed to get my trip to Southampton down to just under £75.
I was wondering if the price that was shown was an advanced fare? I put in the dates i wanted , end of March, so would it do it automatically or is it not that simple.
Also would i have to buy them over the net?
Then do they post them on to me.
Sorry just don't know as have NEVER bought any tickets on line before.

Ok lets see.
1. from ? to Southampton
2. what date in March
3. Up to you, buy them off the net and get them to either post the tickets to you or pick them up at a ticket machine at your local station or take the train times and dates to your local station and ask for Advance tickets over the counter.

As soon as you mentioned Hitchin, I remember you from an old posting, if you did what dzug1 stated;

If you look to were the price you got was quoted, it should tell you if its an advance, anytime or off peak fare.
If you buy over the counter and it cheap Southern Trains tickets (Victoria to Southampton) your after then tell the ticket seller 'Southern Trains Only', however, 'Southern Only Tickets' get a online 10% discount if bought from the Southern website

If you mean when is the latest time I can buy them, I think it is 6pm on the day before travel. Although I have read in the Cheap Train Tickets article, that you can buy Advance Singles up until just before travel.

But do remember, these tickets are sold on a quota basis. So they do sell out. This means that they may become unavailable at anytime.

I often book this route for a friend and usually get.

Glasgow to Birmingham new Street £19. Virgin trains
Birmingham to Cheltenham £8.
Cheltenham to Birmingham £8
Birmingham new Street to Glasgow £19
Return =£54.

Depends on time of day for cheapest fare. Virgin trains from Glasgow to Birmingham is straight through. Depends on what date in May you are travelling. The cheapest advance fares may not be showing yet for your date

Be careful using tickets for under travelling as this is fraud: you are 'misrepresenting your journey to avoid the proper fare due': the chances of actually being detected doing this are low, but don't ever admit it or brag about it as they can & will throw the book at you in court for this.
(ex rpi manager, so yes: I DO know what I am talking about!)
