  • Good savings to be had by splitting at Crewe. I was quoted £143.70 by trainline to go up on a Friday night (at peak times) and come back Sunday morning.

By splitting at Crewe, leaving on upward journey 7 minutes earlier than planned (16:33 not 16:40), and having to do a change in Crewe on the way back, and therefore arriving back in London 10 minutes later than the initially planned direct train - I got the tickets for £93.40 (£50+ saving).

Look out for the Preston-bound trains to Crewe (they are a little slower) which don't always show on National Rail because they are an "overtaken" train and you need to ask it to show these.

Wow, you guys are impressive, thank you!! :money:
Just one question on the F&F. It says on the site we need one child, aged 5-15. Sadly my toddler is 1, so he doesnt cost us in train fare but he also doesnt save us any by having a card - well, not unless I've missed something

I'm pretty sure you can buy a ticket for him as if he were 5 and get the discount.

    Someone else may confirm
    Dzug is right.

    Read their faq
My child is under five. Can I still use a Family & Friends Railcard?

If the only child in the Family & Friends Railcard group is less than five years old, as the Railcard holder you must buy a discounted ticket for the child so that any accompanying adult/s can get the discount on their ticket/s.

So my only conundrum now is:
Buy a railcard which I may not need again, given that husband will hopefully have learnt to drive soon and then pay £64.20 + £20.80 for the card
    OR
    £76.80 without the card.
Thankyou for the advice on the card though.

    Hudsonp, welcome to the forums.

Have you also considered Advance Singles between Euston and Crewe which are valid on London Midland Trains only?
The journey is quite a bit longer, around 3hrs, but are available from £7 each way... depending on date and time of course.

Thanks very much everyone :). Haha no I don't do early, or give a decent amount of notice! I got the standard one in the end from Bedford -> Bath, brought it on the way back from uni from the ticket office as the online site wasn't accepting my card for some reason

    Down from what?
What have you found so far?

    Dates?
    Times?
    How many people?
    Railcard(s)?
  • Sorry not very Clear, Looking at a Sat Sun in March (too early to book yet) Comparisons are coming at approx 160 for 2 Adults 1st class with one HM Forces railcard. Golf clubs make 1st class the best option.

There are Cross Country trains all the way - it's also possible to change at Leeds (for TPX) or York (for East Coast). Doncaster's another possibility at times.

What's cheaper depends on the dates/times of your particular journeys.

And travel via London is not out of the question.

    Well that's a question we can't answer:rotfl:
