  • Hi Keith. Best I've found is LON - Carmarthen 30/10, return next day, 31/10, was (rounded to nearest £), with a senior card, £23 out and £9 back - toal £32 return. Change at Cardiff going, and at Swansea returning. But only one train on the return qualifies for that fare, the outbound fare of £23 is more generally available, off-peak only of course.

Without splitting, the following is possible...

    30 Oct
Dep Paddington 08:45, arr Carmarthen 12:41, Advance Single = £18.30.
But that is the only train that day at that price (ignoring silly times).

    31 Oct
Dep Carmarthen 18:30, arr Paddington 22:32, Advance Single = £9.25.
Or dep Carmarthen 16:31, arr Paddington 20:36, Advance Single = £14.30.
Or dep Carmarthen 17:01, arr Paddington 21:37, Advance Single = £14.30.

    Details from the NXEC website.

    All with railcard.
  • Tnx Keith. Very helpful indeed.
  • Can anyone help me with a train journey from Margate to Fratton or other Portsmouth stations cheaper than £39.20, and that's with a network card.

Travelling 8th Nov, returning next day.
Thank you to anyone that can help me, much appreiciated.:D

Difficult to find bargains between Margate and London, so probably a Off Peak Return at £19.55 is the best you will find.
For the outward leg, travel from Margate to Victoria.
Buy a Southern DaySave ticket for £10.00 for travel from Victoria to Fratton on the Sunday.

For the return from Portsmouth & Southsea to Waterloo, use Megatrain. Ticket at £1 or £4, depending on time of day (no megatrain on Sunday).
Then walk from Waterloo to Waterloo East to catch train back to Margate.

    So, total = £30.55.
  • Thanks for you this Keith, very helpful and hope to lop off £9.00.

  • Any tips as to where I can split this ticket

travelling the weekend before Christmas and back during the week

    £61.40 is the return

I can get cheaper singles one way, but the other direction always bumps it over the £61.40.
    Typically non logical

    thanks

  • Would really appreciate help with the journey from Reading to Darlington? Any advantage of splitting tickets?

    Many thanks

You could try spliting at Newport(South Wales) bit of a longer journey but brings the price down to £42 Return. (Advance singles Reading to Newport(SW) £10
& Newport(SW) to Manchester Pic £11 each way and the same price is available in reverse)

The only problem is that at the moment Arrive Trains Wales hasn't release their cheap Advance tickets for the Manchester Pic to Newport(SW) leg for the week starting the 28th Dec, but it won't be long before they do.

Just make sure that you leave plenty of time to catch your connections at Newport at least 30-45mins

It depends when you want to travel, if you can book well in advance its possible to get a advance ticket for £25.50 one way but on average there will be more £33.40 trains available (Price only available via NXEC website)

If traveling with no notice then spliting at London or Birmingham might help, if you want to give us more details as in dates and times I'm sure somebody on the forum will help find a cheaper fare
