Look for Advace tickets first. More chance of a bargain.

i have looked and there is nothing less than £80. i have tried spliting as well. and that works out more.

Keith, thanks for your reply. I'm looking on the London Midland website, but it only seems to bring up advance tickets, which perhaps aren't as good as the walk-on fare in this instance. But I can't find the super off peak fare that you mentioned. Are you able to point me in the right direction please?

Also, do these websites look as though they are giving you the best bookable fare, but that might not actually be the best fare?

Thanks very much for your advice, Ruthie

Oh sorry, I think I have found it now on the London Midland Website, but it wouldn't apply to the 17.10 train. Is that what you meant by it taking longer? Also, I'm a bit confused. The website says that there are no evening restrictions for off-peak tickets, but the 17.10 train doesn't seem to be an option for that ticket...which I don't understand either?

On the London Midland website, fill in your journey details, e.g. Crewe - London.
Then whet the results show, click on "show other routes", then tick "London Midland Trains only". This wiil remove all but LM Trains, and should show the £20 Super Off Peak fare.

As for your second para, I think these websites show all availabe fares/trains.
But sometimes it is a little tricky getting them to show just what you want.

That £20 ticket is not valid on the 17:10 because the 17:10 is not a London Midland train... Its a Virgin train.

    Have you tried spliting via London;
    Derby - London - London - Plymouth

This option could bring the price down to £46 (Advance singles) + underground ticket/bus.

But give yourself plenty of time to make your connections (late trains and cross london transfer)
Whoa! This image violates our terms of use and has been removed from view

An Off Peak Single via Grand Central Trains only to Sunderland is only £36.00.
Any Time Single Sunderland to Newcastle is £2.90.

    Any good?

P.s. if you're over 60 that fare drops to £32.00.
  • Hi. Has anyone found decent split-ticket fare for this journey (return)? Thx.
