HI All This probably applies to all west coast scottish tickets.

My wife and I are going to Arisaig. Glasgow to Arisaig fare is £95 return each £50 single each way.

Or Dumbarton to Arisaig on same train £25.20 single each way and £70 return. Saving about £45 each (1/2 price).

Train from Glasgow to Dumbarton is £6-7 single or £11 return but it is 25 mins to the train station in the middle of glasgow or 25 mins drive from the house.

Even going from Partick in Glasgow instead of queen street saves a whack :-) £29 single. :-)

PS sorry for the double post
    Cheers

As I said in reply to your other post...
The Anytime Return fare from Glasgow to Arisaig is £47.50 per person.
    I.e. £95.00 for two people.

It is £27.50 single, each way, per person.

I haven't bothered to check your other figures, as that may not be necessary.

I posted this message below and was about to book my tickets when the computer died. I've been without a pc for a while and now that I try to get cheaper tickets, the cheapest is £90 each return again (!) they were £50 each return when I looked and was about to book before. :(

Can someone please help again? We are travelling from Biggleswade to Falmouth on the 30th October and returning on the 6th November (dates have changed since I last posted). My lovely husband has offered to take me and my daughter but he'll be staying here and looking after the dog and I don't want him driving all the way down there and back the same day - twice!
I wonder if someone could possibly help me find 2 adult cheapest return tickets to Falmouth (Cornwall) from Biggleswade, Bedfordshire & back of course, using this system? I don't seem to be very successful and we are looking for the cheapest tickets?

    Many thanks in advance. :)

Plenty of Advance Singles at £17.50 per adult for your outward journey.

The return journey is a bit more expensive.
Lots of Advance Singles available at £36.10 per adult.

    So that's £53.60 each return.

Can't seem to find these fares on the First Great Western site, but are easily findable on the NXEC website.

An Anytime Return via Salisbury will be £39.60 with railcard.
This compares favorably with your "standard £48.20 return" which is actually an Off Peak Return for Any Permitted Route (again with railcard).
If you wish to split the via Salisbury journey at Salisbury and/or Southampton, you may save another pound or so.

thanks keithp, hadn't noticed this route, will be very useful. Better in many ways apart from slight increase in time and large increase in time on sundays. but avoiding london and being allowed to travel anytime is v good in my books!

i've tried many different options but the split ticketing does not work for cardiff - brighton (via london). but please if anyone sees anything do send me a pm

A couple of queries please Keith, do you know if National Express offer ticket reservations for tran journeys through their site?

Also, how is it that good prices are found on there but not on Trainline etc. at the moment? Is it reliable buying rail tickets via National Express, I'm not going to come into problems when we actually travel are we?

    Many thanks. :)

They certainly do for their own trains. Not sure about others.

Don't know the answer to this one. It has been suggested in the past that each train company has their own quotas, but I don't know.
What is strange is that I can't find these fares on FGW's site. If they were there, there would probably be another 10% off.

    Totally reliable.
You will have no problems with the tickets.

Remember that you must travel on the booked train though.

    Hi Keith,

When I asked if they were reliable I suppose I meant that it's a bit worrying that the ticket prices don't appear on trainline's website. I'm concerned in case I book them through National Express's website & because they weren't on other sites, maybe they made a mistake in showing them as being available when they aren't and although I realise I'd get my money back, we would end up paying through the nose for getting them nearer the time.

If you have a train ticket in your hand for a particular train, then the price on it doesn't matter. Indeed, as you know, the price will vary depending on when you buy the ticket. So the only query can be "is there actually a train for the time on my ticket?". Is that right?

From the NXEC website, make notes of the train times you plan on using. You should be able to find those trains on both First Great Western's website and on the National Rail Enquiries website.
When I was looking, I did see trains for the proposed journey on FGW's site, but I couldn't see the Advance Singles I was expecting.

I do hope this helps, but please don't rely entirely on me. We all make mistakes.

Those fares will be available from your local staffed railway station. Just check on the NXEC website for the cheap trains that you want to use and go to the station and get the tickets.

P.s. probably not a good idea to use TheTrainline as your definitive source of fare and timetable details. I'm not suggesting that they are wrong, just that they are only a third party ticket retailer.
  • Just to add to what KeithP has stated, in my experience the NXEC website will show a lot more fare options than other Train operating companies websites. You could check with the National Rail Website as this is as good at showing more fare options aswell but you can't buy your tickets from them.
