Can you go this Saturday or Sunday?
If so, take advantage of SouthWestTrains MidsummerMaddness promotion.
Simply, buy a day return from Waterloo to Poole for £10.00. Valid on any train.
An offpeak return from Margate to Waterloo East will cost you £25.30.

So complete return trip = £35.30 per person.

thank you to KeithP but found out when buying my ticket, if you buy a ticket Margate to London Charing Cross instead of Waterloo East it costs £18.10 (you just get off a stop earlier)

No - it's not the station that makes a difference, it's the ticket type. I would guess it said 'London terminals' anyway

You got a 'super offpeak return' - valid any train at weekends

Keith gave you the 'off peak return' price which would be valid in the week

    Thanks for the feedback.
I should've quoted the Super Off Peak fare, especially as it was my idea to go at the weekend. :o

    Dale, welcome to the forums.

The first thing to say is, as you plan on travelling frequently, if you are eligble for a railcard then get one.

Difficult to beat £80 on those dates, but it can be done by doing the return leg via Newport (South Wales). Advance Single is available via Newport for £36.00 on 9 Sept... Dep Plymouth 16:25, arr Manc Pic at 23:48, change at Taunton and Newport. It does take an hour and a half longer that way though.

Other way is National Express coaches. £53.80 Economy Apex Return for those dates.

    "Money against me"?
Its all money against you. You either pay a higher fare for a quicker time... or you don't.

So if time is money... you need to decide.
  • Ok, here's mine.

Travelling from Paddington to Newquay, one way. Ticket required from Bedwyn - Newquay.

Date of travel was Friday 7th August, booked about 8 days in advance on line.

Quoted cost of single ticket from Bedwyn to Newquay, change at Exeter St David's - £37.50.

Cost paid by splitting ticket as follows (into four - bit fiddly but I had plenty of time to mess around on the net)

Bedwyn - Westbury; Westbury - Exeter; Exeter - Plymouth; Plymouth - Newquay

    £24.

AND, for Plymouth to Newquay, standard class was £6, First Class was £5.50!!! Nice!!

Didn't involve changing my choice of train either - as the train I had originally intended to travel on called at all the stations.

I'm travelling to Bournemouth from Leicester at the weekend. Cheapest option I found was via London St Pancras and return was £72.

However, I've discovered that instead splitting at Birmingham New Street and coming back via St Pancras it was considerably cheaper - total cost £56, saving £16, and the New Street-Bournemouth leg and the Bournemouth-Waterloo leg coming back are both first class!!!

HI All This probably applies to all west coast scottish tickets.

My wife and I are going to Arisaig. Glasgow to Arisaig fare is £95 return each £50 single each way.

Or Dumbarton to Arisaig on same train £25.20 single each way and £70 return. Saving about £45 each (1/2 price).

Train from Glasgow to Dumbarton is £6-7 single or £11 return but it is 25 mins to the train station in the middle of glasgow or 25 mins drive from the house.

Even going from Partick in Glasgow instead of queen street saves a whack :-) £29 single. :-)

PS sorry for the double post
    Cheers
