    Hi

I've been used to grabbing advance fares as soon as they are released, so have been waiting for November tickets to come available, only to find that there seem to be no cheap, advance purchase, specified train only tickets listed ? Have tried First Great Western, The Trainline, QJump etc. I've also tried just inputting London - Padstow or London to Bodmin (there is a rail bus from Bodmin Parkway)

Someone suggested trying splitting, so I was looking for tips ?

2 adults going out on Nov 6th. Return probably Nov 11th / 12th and the best I've found is just over £80 each super supersaver return

Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks :)

Your just a bit early for the advance tickets, most train companies are just releasing now advance tickets for travel around the 6th Nov, so keep checking daily, especially throughout next week as this is when they should be released, as for the Supersaver return you quoted it will be available now and on the day of travel at the same price.

    Hi all.
While arranging a trip to Stafford on the end of october I managed to cut the price of my train tickets from around £118 to £45 approx. per person (with 16-25 railcard) by splitting the journeys as follows:

    Out on Friday afternoon
    Edinburgh to Preston (Lancs)
    Preston to Stafford
    * Same train at Preston, hehe

Back on Monday morning (very early )
    Stafford to Crewe
    Crewe to Preston
    Preston to Edinburgh
    * Change in Crewe but not in Preston again

    Hope this helps someone.
    Cheers!

Have to visit Plymouth Uni for an open day on Sat 17th Oct
with my 17 year old son - he has a 16-25 railcard
we live in South London so can get to any main line station easy enough.
Best price I can get is
£66.75 return - getting paddington - plymouth at 0730 and returning same day same route at 17.54

I have looked at so many other routes and even considered going the day before and staying overnight. The route above is same cost but would have to pay for the hotel.

Megatrain do not run london - plymouth only megabus.

Any brighter ideas before I actually book this?
    Many thanks!

That's actually a good price - remember it's total for both of you, not each.

You can shave 10% off it by booking on First Great Western's own site, rather than whatever outfit you found it with.

I would book the 17:54 return leg via First Great Western for their 10% discount = £19.45 (for two).

For the outward leg, is arriving at Plymouth at 11:55 ok?
If so, this trip may help...
dep Paddington 07:45 arr Plymouth 11:55. Change at Bristol Parkway. Advance Single £23.25. So £42.70 for two return.
For some reason this fare is not shown on the FGW website. But is there on the NXEC website.

You MIGHT find that fare on the FGW site if you go into advanced options and specify Bristol Parkway as the route. But you won't get the 10% if BPW - Plymouth is a Cross Country train. Sorry - don't have the time to look it up now.

Sorry Dzug, I perhaps wasn't very clear.
I can see that journey, via Bristol Parkway, but with no Advance fares available on it.
    Very strange.
Yes the Bristol Parkway - Plymouth leg is XC.

Thanks KeithP - dont know how you find these things! My train arrived at Plymouth at 11.19 and we are only there for the day and was cutting it fine with that one - so think 11.55 might be too late to get there - will miss half the day! Thinking might be better to go up night before and stay at a hotel. Looked at sleeper train and that was £109 for the night with train fare for both of us - which is madness when can stay in a hotel for £50 plus fare on normal train £45.00
cant find your price though think it might have gone up already. But you have given me the idea to split at bristol so might try that.
    Many thanks for your help.

Send the son on his own.....?

The train that avoids Bristol (i.e. goes from Paddington to Reading to Westbury then Taunton is quicker than going via Bristol).
