That's the full normal off peak walkon fare
Try looking here:
http://www.firstgreatwestern.co.uk/
Ask for a return, but it will show you single fares first, which, if there are advance tickets available for the days/times you want will normally be cheaper.0 -

Thankyou very much! Just found some great prices, you have been very helpful.Money, money, money, must be funny, in the rich man's World!0 -
Got a request, Cardiff-Brighton (and Brighton-Cardiff) both returns
this is a route i would use on a regular basis for as much as 2 years, so i need a saving from the standard £48.20 return
if anyone has had any experience with this journey, or with journeys from Bristol or Swansea (same rail line), please let me know! In the mean time, I will seek one myself
note: i have a 16-25 rail card
i would prefer not to rely on advance tickets (apart from the regular 1 week in advance ones) as i don't plan more than 1 week in advance!
Once a week? Once a month?
What days of the week? weekday or weekend?
What time of day?
Coming back the same day or what?
Can we re-write your last sentence as...
"I am happy to use Advance Tickets, as long as I don't have to book more than one week in advance."?
I am sure we can help you. For example, singles are available from Cardiff to Brighton on Thurs 27 Aug for £17.50 (with railcard).

"on a regular basis" what does that mean?

sorry should have been clearer

with my 17 year old son - he has a 16-25 railcard
we live in South London so can get to any main line station easy enough.
Best price I can get is
£66.75 return - getting paddington - plymouth at 0730 and returning same day same route at 17.54
I have looked at so many other routes and even considered going the day before and staying overnight. The route above is same cost but would have to pay for the hotel.
Megatrain do not run london - plymouth only megabus.
Any brighter ideas before I actually book this?
Many thanks!
Thanks for your help on here. Just to let you know - on your advice I decided to book return through FGW on 17th Oct and decided to go there on day before.
I then looked at Megatrain again and know they do London Waterloo - Exeter Central but only showed to 3rd Oct. I waited and watched and today they are showing 2 seats for this route on 16th Oct for £7.00 plus booking fee of 50p. leave 8.20- arrive 11.38
Then using Natl Rail I can the get tickets Exeter Central - Plymouth for £12.30. I would be on the same train and no need to change. Is this correct? Would I have to change carriage though or just stay right where I am ? Got visions of my son and i jumping off and jumping back on again!
I dont have the courage to book it without clariying that I am doing it right! Thanks again.

The return trip on Bank Hol Monday leave Brighton at 17:03 or 18:03 arr Cardiff Central at 21:45 0r 22:59, Advance Single for £11:20.
These fares include railcard discount and also FGW online 10% discount. Buy from FGW website... click on "singles may be cheaper" or something like that.
Similar prices are available for the following weekend, but that's too far into the unknown.0 -

You stay on the same train/carriage at Exeter Central - no need to get off.
However when that train gets to Exeter St Davids you need to change onto a Cross Country train to Plymouth0 -

Book your Megatrain tickets to Exeter St. Davids though, rather than Exeter Central. Same price. You have to change trains at Exeter St.Davids.
Catch the 11:48 train from Exeter StD. This is a Cross Country train.
Off Peak Day Single (valid any off peak train) from Exeter StD to Plymouth is only £7.40 each. Get this ticket before you leave as you will not have much time at Exeter... only six mins.
But next train for Plymouth is at 12:10.
Oops... late again.:rolleyes:0 -
Ok, next weekend is a bit odd being a bank holiday, but leaving Cardiff at 19:30 on Friday and arr Brighton at 23:59, an Advance Single can be had for £13:55.

thanks, has there been any report of successful split ticketing? i've tried using didcot parkway, reading and london as intermediate "stops" but as far as getting the standard offpeak return goes, there were no savings0 -

This compares favorably with your "standard £48.20 return" which is actually an Off Peak Return for Any Permitted Route (again with railcard).
If you wish to split the via Salisbury journey at Salisbury and/or Southampton, you may save another pound or so.0
