Just to add to what KeithP has stated, in my experience the NXEC website will show a lot more fare options than other Train operating companies websites.
Just to say to others that Southern and London Midland use the same booking engine, so you don't have to use NXEC. And unlike NXEC they don't require a minimum purchase either.
Did you really mean to put loose?
Lose: no longer possess, not to retain, unable to find
Loose: not firmly or tightly fixed in place

Many thanks again Keith, they only send out the tickets near the time though don't they? So for instance, if I ordered some advance tickets and received them a week before we went and they were wrong, we'd have a problem and have to pay a lot more on top. I know......I'm a worrywort! ;)

Seems to me your best option is...

Go to the NXEC website and decide exactly which trains you want to travel on.

    Write all the details down.

Take this information to Biggleswade Station[1] at the earliest opportunity and swap your money[2] for tickets.

    Your worries are now over.

Wait patiently for your train. (you can go home and wait if you like, as there are still many days to wait).

[1] or any other staffed railway station
[2]alternatives to real money, e.g. credit cards, are accepted.

No - they post advance tickets on the day you buy them - or maybe on a Monday after a weekend.

    Thanks very much dzug1. :)

There was no way I was thanking Keith after that heavy sarcasm.

Sorry me again, but Keith was so helpful I thought I would ask again
once again need to get from Margate to Poole
need to travel 17th September and return 19th September (I'm flexable with times)
would also consider National Express coaches or a mix of train and coach
    and suggestions please?
    Thank you

Megatrain has fares from Waterloo to Poole on those dates for £10.00 each way at the moment. Plus a booking fee.

Of course, you still need to get from Margate to Waterloo.
Maybe a coach can save money on this leg.
  • I have recently bought split tickets for two routes as follows:
Worcester to Sunderland ( Split at Birmingham, Derby, Sheffield, York and Newcastle ) and saved around £20 on an off peak return using a senior rail card.
The other, also using a senior rail card, was from Great Malvern to Hull, split at Worcester, Derby and Sheffield saving £18 on the off peak return.
Would never have thought of 'split tickets' had it not been for 'Moneysavingexpert' great idea.

To anyone going Newcastle to London - I've managed to save my mate (who doesnt have much money so is always looking for the cheapest way) £12 by splitting at Doncaster for the 4th October - £7 Newcastle-Doncaster and £22 Doncaster to London. Cheapest direct ticket - £41, saving £12!

  • Split at Surbiton: Peak return Petersfield to Waterloo £41.60

Petersfield to Surbiton: £29.10, Surbiton to Waterloo: £9.80 giving a saving of £2.70.

Also works on off-peak tickets and for London Travelcards: book Petersfield-Surbiton return, then an all zones travelcard from Surbiton (edge of Zone 6).
