Sonyagiles, what have you found so far?

Whilst there a re plenty of people willing to help you, its good to hear that you have tried to help yourself too.

    Can you please clarify...
Is it two adults who both have railcards that are travelling?
Or is it two adults and two others who have railcards, i.e. four people in total?

    Single journies, I imagine?

Mainly just prices around £60 each journey, there may not be cheaper one's as I know trains have been a lot more expensive this year then when I travelled last year. Just 2 adults both with 16-25 railcard. Single journeys.

*To get these fares, you must book online via the NXEC website.
  • I've done the Edinburgh-Cambridge journey for you using National Rail

When entered as 'Edinburgh to Cambridge' leaving in the morning, the following journey was returned:-

Edinburgh 0900 ---> Peterborough 12.46 (NXEC) **Change Here**

    Peterborough 1316 ---> Cambridge 14.08 (Cross Country)

Total Cost for 2 adults with 16-25 Railcards = £71.30

Splitting at Doncaster though does this:-

    Edinburgh 0900 Doncaster 1200 - £19.30 (NXEC - Stay on train)

    Doncaster 1200 Peterborough 1246 - £12.50 (NXEC - **Change Here**)

    Peterborugh 1316 Cambridge 1408 - £6.60 (Cross Country)

Total cost £38.40 - almost half, same journey. Easy peasy!!

    Thanks Ginnersinner. Good find.

Just to build on that (hope you don't mind)...
Book via NXEC and save 10% on their legs, bringing your fare down to £34.90 for two from Edinburgh to Cambridge.

  • Some rail companies' own websites don't charge a booking fee, I know First Great Western don't, so you might save that cost too by going straight to NXEC and Cross Country (and the tickets end up coming from 'The Train Line' anyway!!)

Oh, and nice one KeithP for the extra 10%!

  • Hello

I am travelling by myself this Friday 25th to Redruth after 1pm and Returning Sunday 27th after 4pm and the best fair I can find is 80 quid!!!!:mad:

I do have a network railcard but think this will only go as far as Tiverton or Exeter but not Exeter St Davids where the train stops.

I cant work out this split ticketing, I would be so grateful for any help.

My motor packed up, Piston rings gone this morning, so have to be train!!!:mad:

Firstly, a Network Railcard can be used to Exeter St. Davids.
    See this map.

Try and book through the FGW website to get their 10% discount on their Advance Singles.
I cant work out this split ticketing...
    It really is quite simple...
    1. work out where your train stops (or where you change train).
    2. price a ticket from your starting point to one of the stops, and from that stop to your destination.
    3. is that fare cheaper than a through ticket? Yes, buy two tickets instead of one through ticket.
    4. Try the same thing with other stopping points.
    5. Keep doing this until you find a cheaper ticket.

Ok, this will take some time and have a paper and pencil handy.
Note that there may not be a cheaper split available at all.

    HTH.

    Further thoughts...

Get a Off Peak Return (with railcard) from Twickenham to Exeter St.D via Honiton. £41.20.
Part of the return trip will be by bus, but its price you are interested in.

Look for suitable Advance Singles from Exeter to Redruth. They are available for £6.00 or £9.45 (or dearer) each way. Buy these from your local staffed station before 6pm the day before travel.
