  • Hi,

I'm starting Uni this Oct. and I'll be commuting to Huddersfield everyday. Has anybody got any ideas about cheap train fares (other than buying a monthly season ticket which costs about £156)?

    Thanks.

Booking online individual daily fares might be a better bet as cheap day return is £6.70. If you did weekdays only that would be £145 a month. It would also be worth looking at single fares as these sometimes are available cheaper than return prices.
  • :T Cheers mate.
  • Total newbie to cheap train fares....

need to travel from Llandudno Junction (north wales) to London over a weekend, anyway i can get cheap fares?

    Check the GNER site:

I know from Bangor they have some cracking deals, i.e £15.00 single to London, therefore it would be £30.00 per person for the return trip.

  • Hi everyone,

just thought I would share this experience with you. I travel to Manchester from Liverpool every day and have never had any problems with getting a split return ticket to Newton le Willows first, then on to Manchester, saving £2 a day (over £500 a year!). I've had a few ticket people grumble saying I should get off the train but nothing serious.

Travelling this week I was told by a ticket lady that it was policy and she could not issue me with two tickets. I asked what policy and she didn't answer me. I kept asking why I couldn't get two tickets and asked what if I wanted to get off at Newton le Willows and then get back on the train either now or later on, and she said that was against the law and she would then fine me! I then again asked what policy she was referring to and she said, quote, "Look, this is a busy rush-hour train and I don't have the time to issue two tickets, you're either getting a direct ticket through to Manchester or I'm issuing a fine for refusing to buy a ticket."

So I eventually got the direct ticket, but made a note of everything she said and took her name. She was not happy about me doing that and I think she got the hump that I was saving £2!!!

I'm in the process of sending a complaint to Northern Rail about this incident, I'll let everyone know what their Customer Service team say about this.
  • Hi there,

Me & my hubby want to take our two kids (8 & 4) to manchester (Dr who exhibition) on Tuesday 11th Sept.

We live near Pontefract / Glasshoughton - and would love to go by train as a suprise to the kids.

I am finding it really daunting to find the cheapest way to do this....any help would be massively appreciated. Thank you.
  • Hi

I'm trying to find reasonably priced (return) fares from Norwich to London for 2 adults this thursday (1 has a YP railcard). I tried the trainline site but they didn't seem to have any cheap tickets at all and I'm totally new to the whole journey splitting thing. I've also looked at megabus but they don't go to norwich and national express but that is as much as the train and takes twice as long. Any ideas please?

Try pressing the 'singles' button - there are some there, off-peak, particularly if you come back later in the evening

Edit - that's a reply to the Norwich question btw
