South West Trains from 20 May 2007

From 20 May 2007, South West Trains will increase some fares. For example, a cheap day return from Southampton Central to London Waterloo will increase from £27.20 to £32.60 (nearly a 20% increase!):

Cheap Day Return Southampton Central - Basingstoke
    £10.40

Cheap Day Return Basingstoke - London Waterloo
    £16.40

    TOTAL
    26.80

Less than the current Southampton Central - London Waterloo price! To do this THE TRAIN MUST STOP AT BASINGSTOKE or the combination of tickets WILL NOT BE VALID and you will be travelling illegally. Don't know if this is the cheapest combination or there is a cheaper one.

Megabus or megatrain - from £1 each way

    http://www.megabus.com/uk/ for both of them

Also National Express http://www.nationalexpress.com/save/funfares.cfm - also from £1 but no booking fee, so cheaper

Hi > I've spent days pouring over the rail maps to find a cheap way for my DH to travel form St Albans to Carlilsle at pek time. Obvioously you'd think of the West Coast main line. But at peak times(or atleast when he needed to travel) this comes no cheaper than about £100 single.
However I tried it via Kings Cross up the East Coast main line chaning at Newcastle for which their is bargin fares available at any time of the morning.

    Total saving about £80.

SO if you can face travelling into London and out again well worth investigating East coast trains rather than west coast trains
  • Hi,

I am new to the site, i found it whilst serching google for cheaper train tickets. I have read through ways inwhich to make the ticket cheaper however i cannot understand how the split ticket system works. Can anybody help me to make my ticket from peterborough to darlington cheaper whilst staying on the same train?

    Thanks

You look up the fare from Peterborough to say York and then York to Darlington and see if it works out cheaper than a Peterborough - Darlington one.
  • oh ok i see, but it may work out just as expensive to get the full ticket.

Yep it mostly does, but there are sometimes anomalies that work in your favour.

For your journey advance purchase single tickets are likely to work out best
