Has anyone tried megatrain.com they are limited in times of travel and the number of stations but the savings are HUGE I recently traveled return from birmingham to southampton a journey usually costing £45 -£60+ I got it for £5!! even if they do not travel from your local station you can buy a normal ticket for the extra bit of journey and still save loads. Worth a try, michelle:hello: Hiya, I'm single mom, avid moneysaver and freecycler, sometimes  but definatly0

I used to travel York to Newcastle and there were a variety of train operators but the annual GNER ticket was valid on all operators on that route. It's also possible to pay by direct debit with some train companies so you don't have to take the cost of an annual ticket in one hit.
Also, if travelling during school summer holidays, on some routes the usual peak restrictions don't apply for those early morning commutes. It's worth checking to see what you might save.0 -
Cheapest Fare Help - Manchester - Isle Of Wight
Hello - this is my first post although I find the entire website unbelievably useful.
I am going to the Isle of Wight from Manchester by train, my friend has advised that I get the train to Southampton and then the ferry to the Isle of Wight. Any tips on cheapest tickets on this route?
Many thanks.

Hi Guys, i have been reading a few tips on these forums over the last few weeks and must say have found them ALL very useful.
At the moment my friend is looking to travel from Newcastle to Clapham Junction by train on the 27th of May 2007 rtn on the 28th the basic rtn ticket costs £98 but by taking the advice i have read on here I have split the journey to:
Newcastle - York
York - Clapham Junction and added a Young persons rail card for £20 as she is 18. This has knocked the price down to £81.85 (including £20 for the rail card) So that was quite a good saving.
I was just wondering really if anyone can think of other ways that I have missed or that you might know of to bring the ticket price down even lower.
I have checked megatrain.com but they only seem to be doing bus routes atm and not train.
Many thanks for your time and help.0 -

The megatrain and megabus web sites seem to have been merged - you can book for both on the one page where there's a drop down box to choose rail or bus.
I don't think it helps for your particular journey though.0 -

The fares you are quoting seem to be standard returns, these are available on the day of travel, so no need to book them yet. Keep checking either National Rail or GNER websites as singles from Newcastle start at £10 but you are probably too early, £10 fares are available for the 20th/21st May so maybe try again next week. From Kings X- Clapham will cost £4 each way but this works out cheaper than an advanced sinle from Newc-Clapham at £21:80. You wont get any more discount with a railcard and you will have to travel on the exact train you book, no flexibility at these prices.0 -
Thanks for all you help everyone, my friend manages to get her tickets for about £50 so she saved around £50 thanks to you lot0

Morning all,
Now I know all of you have much better ways to spend your time, and I am looking myself but I am trying to find a cheaper way to travel from Liverpool St London, to Ware in Hertfordshire. It is only a couple of times a week and I leave after work and have to return before 10am (which voids some of the offers) So far the cheapest it is coming out as is £7.20 each way. I enjoy finding discounts for the others guys at work, but this route has me stumped.
Like I said realise everyone has a lot of more important things to do but seeing as its National Help a Stranger day I thought Id give it a try.
Thanks,

Living near Chester is a bonus. We've discovered that if you buy a train ticket to London from a 'just over the border' station in Wales, it is cheaper than buying one from England. Somethig to do with the Welsh Assembly. I get on the train in Chester as that's where the train has to travel through anyway, but my ticket is from a station in North Wales.
Try it and see!0 -
Shrewsbury to Derby, Manchester, Nottingham or Liverpool.. always ticket split from Shrewsbury to Birmingham first ... you save on every one. at least that is in my experience... both sets of tickets can be bought at Shrewsbury Station at the same time. watch the faces of theTicket Issuers.. some of them dont even know about this..0
