It's a through train normally - occasionally change at Birmingham. Just book it on the Virgin web site or any of the others. I tried your dates and there were one or two trains where it was available. £17.50 one way and £12.50 the other IIRC.
http://www.chilternrailways.co.uk/ is my favourite but Virgin's own can sometimes be cheaper - it offers half savers where the value tickets have sold out.0 -

Try it and see!0 -

If anyone questions it, you got off at chester for a toliet break and are now continuing your journey! Train companies breach their t&c's by cancelling their services on a whim, i'm sure being sly with where your ticket is from won't kill them0 -

It matters not one jot that Chiltern Railways don't go anywhere near Taunton - you can buy any rail ticket from them and their web site is very clearly laid out and easy to use in my view.
I got the same prices on both sites.
There is one advantage to using Virgin's own site - if you can only get a value ticket in one direction they will sell you a 'half saver' on the other if a saver is valid on the train you want.0
