Pick what suits you best - remember you don't have to use the same airline both ways and you can get half price train tickets to Prestwick. You can use your student railcard in a vain attempt to reduce the £7 each way from STN to Cambridge by train
If you do book Ryanair watch out for them adding "optional" things to your fare, so don't just click through the booking pages but check them carefully at each stage
Oooh, never thought of flying. I shall look into it. Thanks!0 -
Virgin are offering one pound tickets on their website..... check out virgintrains.co.uk and click on 'print @ home' for further details. Tickets available upto 8 weeks in advance.0

www.megatrain.com (and www.megabus.com) have fares from £1. From here in Exeter, trains go to Plymouth, Bristol or London Waterloo. The buses go from Exeter to London Victoria. I believe they also go from/to other places as well. Need to book well in advance to get the £1 fares - check the longest return date available and work back from there if timing is not crucial.0

Wow this is unbelievable!
TheTrainline was quoting around £120 to go Bristol- Leeds return (5 hr journey via either London or Newport?!!)
Fare splitting and going via Birmingham New Street was not only nearly 1 hour quicker, but cost a grand total of just £48! I will definately be fare splitting every journey I do now
Thanks for the article! :beer:0 -
Hello everyone and thank you for this thread - v interesting if rather taxing to follow some times
I'm on a challenge - with my new OH! - to find a way to visit EVERY country in the EU next year, but without flying, and doing it for an average of £100 per country. We can only manage the briefest of stops in each country as we shall have to be doing it in long weekends and the occasional week off work. I think this MoneySaving challenge may tax me more than most.
Any bright ideas anyone?
I'm looking at the split fares option to get around the UK [Cardiff/London/Edinburgh/Belfast and then on to Dublin since we'd be over there anyway!] already and have a major headache building.
Thanks for all the information and, if anyone feels inclined to help out - thanks in advance. If you see me on here - shout at me to get off and go and get something useful done!!0 -
Cheap advance singles are likely to do you better than split ticketing - or travel by coach/bus instead.
For the UK I'd suggest National Express or Megabus overnight to Glasgow, bus to Stranraer, ferry to Belfast or Larne, bus to Dublin, ferry to Holyhead then bus/coach back to your starting point. I'm assuming London - but your user name suggests Wales?? You'd probably pick up the coach in Birmingham then.
I'll do some more thinking....
Or forget the no flying rule.....0 -

I'm surprised you found anything at all - the last train from Manchester to Stafford that Saturday is just before 9pm.
What times did you find out of interest? The online timetable does throw up later departures - but involving spending the night on Liverpool or Chester station and arriving home at 9 or 10 next morning. They are best ignored.0 -
Well I was looking at Crewe or Stoke, I live near Stafford and was just trying to find any possibilities but it isn't easy unless like you say you want to stop overnight. What goes around - comes around

Well there's a 2302 from Piccadilly to Crewe if that helps
If you can get to Penkridge, there's a National Express coach at around 3 in the afternoon returning at midnight. £13.60 day return0
