  • I am on Npower's 'Spreading Warnth' tariff - and have been very pleased with it.

I am on an electric-meter and get a free top-up every quarter.

The amount I get would seem to add up to about £500 over 4 years, which is comparable with the new scheme. They are not taking any new customers onto 'Spreading Warmth' - all new applicants are being put on the new scheme..I'll have to look through the website this coming week and work out if I am better off switching.

Just thought on after I posted. I live in a small 2 bed house & npower spreading warmth tariff so far isn't proving to be good for me. Only last week I got a letter from them asking me to up my payments to £199 a month. I telephone them & they still want at least £100 a month. I'm actually considering leaving them as I think they are taking the p**s.

Are you paying off arrears .. the devil made me do it.. ?

Even if you live in a badly insulated all~electric home that's a massive amount of kWh per annum. £80-100 is a low to moderate figure taking into account the £200 [ish ] discount you get from the Social tariff but at twice that figure there is something wrong. :)

Nope not paying off any arrears (only joined them March 2011). When I initially joined I was paying £50 a month, then after the first quaterly bill, I upped it to £60 a month. I was only paying about £80 per month when I was with EON.

I have gas heating/hot water & an electric cooker. I also use all low energy bulbs. So, can't really understand where they get there figures from.

That's iffy .. .. ask in this part of the forum. But the first thing the truly knowledgeable will ask you is how many kWh you use for both gas and leccy because its the only way to get at the facts of whether or not you are on the best tariff.

If I was spending your amount I'd have 4 teenage girls still living at home taking 4 baths [ not showers ] a day. :D

This is email I got today from British Gas

The Warm Home discount has replaced the Essentials tariff that you are currently on. To see if you now qualify for the Warm Home discount please call our specialist Essentials team on 0800 072 71008 and one of my colleagues will be able to discuss the tariff options with you.

Is it a pre-payment meter youre on? Ive just applied through E-on (they sent me a thing to fill in and post back, but i dont know if i will receive anything yet) and just wondered how the scheme would work through a pre-pay meter.
  • Yes, I am on a pre-payment meter.

I top-up with a plastic 'key'. Every quarter I get a letter from Npower which I take to the main post-office in town - with my key and ID - and they give me my quarterly free top-up.

I rang BG team today number posted above

Told me you cant apply when you are on essential tariff. The essentials tariff apparently gives you 10% off standard tariff and the new scheme gives you around 6% off, this is what they told me

Its a government sponsored initiative agreed by the energy utilities providers. I've no idea about your particular provider but I would think it also supports the industry standard of .. .. .. applying the discount to """ all qualifying households regardless of payment method """
