  • Yes, I am on a pre-payment meter.

I top-up with a plastic 'key'. Every quarter I get a letter from Npower which I take to the main post-office in town - with my key and ID - and they give me my quarterly free top-up.
Its a government sponsored initiative agreed by the energy utilities providers. I've no idea about your particular provider but I would think it also supports the industry standard of .. .. .. applying the discount to """ all qualifying households regardless of payment method """

Thanks guys. Fingers crossed then :)
  • havent heard anything from Npower - anyone else?

is this tarrif worth going on? How much cheaper is it than the standard trarrif? Thinking of the above person on Npower who is now paying a lot more per month than before...

I have a websaver tarrif but my Dad wouldn't be able to understand how to do that so he's on a standard tariff and would be eligible for this.
  • sophlowe45,

As far as I'm aware the answer is yes your dad will be £200+ per annum better off on the tariff compared to the standard tariff using a like with like amount of kWh leccy / and / or gas.

Why ' the devil made me do it ' ended up paying more I've no idea but it can not have been caused by going to the Warm Home Discount / Essentials Tariff from the standard tariff. There is something very wrong with her account or maybe in the coldest winter for decades it was a case of the consumption [ a rise in quantity ] rather than the kWh unit cost of the ' social tariff '

I assume that people will have to apply for the discount, but how do I do this? Do I just ring my supplier?[/QUOTE]
I'm with Southern Electric and went to their website yesterday morning (in desperation as I had been going round in circles with the gov.uk site!) and they have a form to fill in which is very short and easy so I filled it in. No doubt all other suppliers will have one on their sites. Late yesterday afternoon I had a telephone call from a lovely lady telling me that I qualified and she would be sending me further details, also she has changed me to paperless billing which also saves 1% - Every little helps. What wonderful fast customer service I was definitely impressed. I sometimes think I must be blinkered with my head in the sand; as the only place I learn about so many things available to me, and obviously many others, and are of great importance, is on MSE. Even if you aren't sure whether or not you are entitled, it has to be worth just taking 5 minutes to fill in this form to find out. It really is easy.:)
  • Thank you Richie-from-the-boro, just passed this info on to my parents. I told my mother that the government were that sick of pensioners spending their winter fuel allowance on jumpers and coats in TK Maxx, they have changed the system and you now get a discount on your leccy bill instead. She was unimpressed, but Dad, who pays the bill was delighted!
