    serious question

what if he just wants to spend his holiday chilling at home watching sport (or whatever) apart from the 3 days committed?

11, he has 2 weeks off well 17 days if you want to be precise and 5 days of that he is going with his brother on their bikes.

And now we come to the crux of the matter. He wants to be ready to go off with his brother and the exceedingly short trip with you is just something he wants to get over and done ASAP.

ok if you say so, he does not go with his brother until 2 weekends after we get back

He needs to give an adult reason then, not the somewhat "because I said so" you are currently getting. No wonder you are angry and confused over this.

Does seem somewhat inflexible especially as camping requires so much effort setting up and taking down, to only have one night camping seems a huge waste (presuming 1 night camping, 1 night Travelodge).

Shame you don't drive as I'd have dropped my OH at the nearest station on the Tuesday and let him find his own way back.

Is he someone who likes everything to be planned? I ask as my OH would freak at the thought of just pulling in at a campsite on the way back! He has the image he has planned in his head and it causes no end of problems if it is changed last minute.

FWIW, I think you are right - it's a lot of hassle for 2 nights! Maybe he will come round once you are away and he relaxes a bit...
